The Minister of Sports explained to Putin why Russia missed the medals of the 2022 Olympics
Sports Minister Oleg Matytsin follows from the Council for the Development of Physical Culture and Sports. Vladimir Putinwho noticed that at the 2022 Olympics Russia grew worse than planned.
“Objectively, Russia has won 32 medals. We were the best in the number of silver, bronze [медалей], fourth places. And of course, this, on the one hand, pleases. It is also pleasing that Russian athletes, who are 68 years old, won medals of various denominations. This is also the best indicator. For example, there are 59 athletes in Canada, 57 in Germany, 34 in Norway. It is also important that we climbed the podium in ten types of the program. This is also the best result.
But, of course, you absolutely correctly noted that we did not reach the results in gold medals: there are six of them, and before the final result, which was announced by us, two medals were not captured.
What are the reasons. The first, from our point of view, is the insufficient centralization of command management and preparation of national teams, including scientific, methodological, logistical and medical support, which Veronika Igorevna Skvortsova and I also defended today. We consider important changes in regulatory documents. We received the corresponding offer.
The second, also important, objective moment. We do not have a number of decorative facilities for the training of athletes on the territory of the Russian Federation – in particular, year-round training for skiing, biathlon, speed skating, specialized disciplines, a freestyle park and snowboarding. And this became especially noticeable, of course, during the pandemic, and especially during the period of detention. Corresponding proposal on behalf of the police with a financial and economic justification. I look forward to your support in the implementation of this project.
There were, of course, subjective factors, such as the exclusion of Russian athletes due to the need for vaccination, or the intentional failure to provide a visa.
I also consider it objective that many of our athletes have been ill with covid – these are our leaders, for example, Pavel Kulizhnikov, Repilov, Kolyada, Maxim Gurov, Eduard Latypov. They had been ill on the eve of the Olympic Games and could not recover, ”the Kremlin press service quoted Matytsin as saying.
