Belgium among the European countries where data is the most expensive
In Belgium, the gigabyte of data is billed on average €5. Up to five times more expensive than in more than half of the countries of Europe.
Belgium remains one of the worst students in Europe in terms of telecom costs. In 2020, the gigabyte of data was billed on average €5 in the country. A much higher amount than in most other European countries.
Italy thus ranks at the top of the list of European countries where data is billed the least expensive, with an average cost of 41 cents per gigabyte, more than ten times cheaper than in Belgium. In Ukraine, Russia, Poland, Romania, Georgia, France, Denmark, Turkey, Armenia, Austria, Estonia, Ireland, England and Slovakia, the cost of a gigabyte of data was less than 1 euro.
But if the data is more expensive in Belgium than in most neighbors, Belgium is not necessarily the most expensive country in Europe. Greece wins the palme d’or with a gig billed at €11.18. It is far ahead of Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Norway, Portugal, and Belgium, which therefore rank seventh among the markets where data is the most expensive.
Worldwide, the most expensive gigabyte of mobile data is in Malawi. You have to spend an average of €25.4 per gigabyte. Conversely, India is the country on the planet where mobile data is the cheapest. Count only €0.08 per gigabyte.
These huge price differences are largely explained by the presence of competitors in the market. The more one pays for a diversified telecom offer, the lower the prices tend to be. In a country where only two networks coexist, the average tariff is set at €12.08 per gigabyte. A country with four networks offers more attractive prices, with a gig billed at €4.87 on average.
One thing is certain: the arrival of a new player on the Belgian telecoms market could bring down prices drastically.
