IS calls on supporters to carry out attacks in Europe again (Brussels)
The Islamic State (IS) terror network has said it would “venge” its previous leader, who was killed in February, and called on its supporters in the same breath for the war in Ukraine.
On February 3, US President Joe Biden announced the death of the former leader of IS. Abu Ibrahim al-Qurayshi (45) was killed in an American raid on a villa in northern Syria, near the Turkish border. The man is targeting the action of a US Special Forces operation in direct Syria, a region under its control.
Biden explained. “The operation sent a strong message to terrorists around the world: we are coming after you and we will find you,” Biden said. The man’s death, along with that of the group’s named members, was also confirmed on March 10 by the terror organization itself.
crusader war
The current announcement of IS announced in an audio message on Telegram on Sunday a revenge campaign. The network also called on its followers to resume attacks in Europe using the “crusader war”, in a reference to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Abu Hassan al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, the new caliph of the radical Sunni organization has so far made little impression. After a meteoric rise in 2014 in Iraq and neighboring Syria and the conquest of vast territories, IS saw the self-proclaimed ‘caliphate’ crumble by launching offensives in these two countries in 2017 and 2019.
But Islamic State is still very much present in Iraq and Syria. According to a UN report published last year, the jihadist organization in both countries would have ‘a total of 10,000 active fighters’.
