To be in Debrecen: from Magda Szabó to the Tank Trap, from Zsib to the Great Forest
Debrecen – What do we have in common in a singing teacher, a florist and an obstetrician-gynecologist? How are women? How successful are they? Or how good they are at what they do? That’s it, that’s it. In addition, they are actors in a new volume.
I only left the book on the couch until I walked out of the kitchen for a glass of water, and when I got back, it was already in my wife’s hands. He flipped through, looked at the pictures, read into the texts, listed the acquaintances who told about themselves and testified about their relationship with this city, Debrecen.
In fact, this is the shortest way to summarize how easy this volume is. The release of this copy of the album ONLY as a Sample Image (p) has already been completed: it has taken its place and delights its reader.
Slightly more than half a hundred women from Debrecen are featured in this beautiful exhibition album. Very diverse: hurdles Olympian, singing teacher (who is a textile artist and soap maker by the way), sociologist, puppeteer, ballet master, kindergarten teacher, folk dancer, tour guide, painter, journalist, event organizer, jewelry designer, confectioner, confectioner, pianist, pianist there is an agricultural engineer among them, to name but a few. There are certainly some of them who have met in the real world, but here, on these pages and columns, they become very close acquaintances of each other – and of us, the readers as well. Their common denominator is this album, the city, their life, into which they are subtly guided.
There are those who share the deepest, most painful secret with us. What she couldn’t tell anyone, but tells everyone that 27 years ago, a “doctor” (so, in quotation marks, as she writes) told her when the little girl was born, “Mom, this is a little animal, let her die here”. Another doctor, on the other hand, brought him a book on Down syndrome, and a third explained what it means to have a punctured heart. Another tells her what this place means to her, which she can’t call her hometown, yet it is the city of her life because she has lived here since she was a child, tied to her family, friends, acquaintances and her profession.
“I can say that there are few parts of Debrecen where I have not been, where there are no memories or feelings.”
And yet another recalls that although he had many opportunities to be elsewhere, to study, to live, he could not imagine his life anywhere else but here.
“Like a real star hiker, I walked around and learned about the world. I have a lot of experience and knowledge for Stockholm, but I finished all the schools in Debrecen at home. ”
For some, the Homokert is the lovely place and the buzzer, the “zsibi”, as the people of Debrecen mention it. To another is the archives of the Greek Catholic Metropolitan Office: his first job, which he got to in a very vicious way because “it is very difficult to find a job as a disabled person,” goes there to work as happily as if he were going home.
There are as many stories coming to life briefly on these pages as there are actors on this album. Sometimes weeping, sometimes ridiculous, sometimes touching, sometimes quite amazing fates and personalities unfold before us. It’s interesting to see how many there are who were not born here but still belong here, they are here at home. Gyöngyi Porkoláb, the dreamer and editor of the volume, is one of them.
“In the year of the birth of my second daughter, speaking of the family’s decision, I moved from the capital to Debrecen. The city of Civis, seen by many from the outside, is not easy to give up, but maybe I’m not alone with that thought. ”
– we can read his lines. What, however, is not how many ideas, how many initiatives are associated with its name – and all in the name of value, local value, Debrecen. Creating NGOs, organizing community events, balls, talk evenings, conveying the message of the Field of Dignity program, a running festival for the dignity of cancer patients, literary competitions for schoolchildren – just to name a few. But we can also mention ONLY the fairs, where the audience can meet local players in the creative industry, or the memorable series of the Gateway, where we have proved how well tradition and modernity fit together. The memory of his dear writer, Magda Szabó, is preserved by a play and a calendar book due to his idea and production, and now he has come up with this album.
No question: this is a personal selection. Every selection is – but that does not mean that it does not object. For the ladies in the volume all know something special that they are very good at, which is why they deserve respect and esteem. Also to be here on this album. You could come up with a reason why there aren’t more, hundreds, two hundred or even thousands – but then this album would be even bigger. I had to draw a line, this volume is like this, with so many women, so many heroes, so many role models. As an example, for example, what a person can be like, what life can be like.
The foreword is written by Deputy Mayor Diána Széles. S below his photo is a painfully short quote: “I’m silenced by this impossibility”.
Behind the black and white cover (the work of Gréta Barna) are colorful, artistic portraits (inspired by Krisztina Csatáry-Nagy), quotes from the authors chosen by the actors in Debrecen – from Magda Szabó, Lőrinc Szabő, Árpád Tóth, Szilárd Borbély and Éva Stetka and personal testimonies of what it is like to live here, what they like in this city, where I would take whoever comes to them. What they see this place as, what it means to mean, to be a Debrec.
This refreshing variety makes this album perfect for anyone (and not just ladies!) To flip through at any time – just like that. Wonder how colorful the world is and how our Debrecen is. And beyond that, the thought of the fate of the reader can even hit a nest. How many colors (sometimes backs) of life. How many tracks and directions. And maybe there are examples of where he could go on his own path. As in the volume, there are more than fifty role models.
