A giant pea has rolled into the botanical garden: It commemorates the anniversary of Mendel’s birth
Mendel’s giant peas were inflated on Wednesday afternoon by the staff of the Botanical Garden of the Faculty of Science of Masaryk University in the area in Kotlářská Street in front of the frog pond. “It should be visible until April 25,” said garden specialist Hana Ondrušková.

Peas symbolize the famous experiments of the scientist Gregor Johann Mendel with peas, which he performed behind the walls of the Augustinian Abbey in Brno on the current Mendel Square. “It commemorates two hundred years since the birth of a genius scientist whose research results are of importance to science and society comparable to the work of Charles Darwin,” Ondrušková outlined.
The seven-meter-long pea has already been seen in other places in Brno in recent months. For example, on Moravské náměstí near the statue of Jošt, or on the university campus in Bohunice.

Mendel was also a passionate beekeeper. His observation of bees and breeding experience in their time significantly raised the level of beekeeping. “The panel exhibition Bees and Other Drunks installed in the garden’s greenhouses thus thematically brings Mendel’s legacy closer together,” added Ondrušková. The exhibition will run until May.
On Easter, the botanical garden is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm.
