Prague will continue to support Czech language courses for children with different mother tongues

The Prague councilors agreed to provide a subsidy from the capital budget. m of Prague for the city districts of Prague 6 and Prague 8.
These will concern the continuation of intensive Czech language courses for primary school pupils with different mother tongues (OMJ) and an increase in the budget of the contributory organization Academic Gymnasium and Language School with the right to state language exams for continuing Czech as a second language (ČDJ) courses for pupils and high school students with OMJ. The total amount is over 2.5 million crowns.
“Prague has been supporting the education of children with different mother tongues in pre-school, primary and secondary education for many years. It provides over two million crowns a year for activities in primary schools. Especially at this time of war in Ukraine, there is a need to focus more on supporting the integration of children into Czech tribal classes, improving their access and ensuring their continuation, “said Vít Šimral, Prague’s councilor for education.
The intention to carry out an intensive Czech language course for pupils with OMJ at Prague primary schools arose from the declared need for intensive Czech language tuition for pupils who come to Prague without a basic knowledge of the Czech language. For this reason, it is not possible to take part in school teaching at all in the initial period, and you lose the possibility of quick and valuable integration into education, and for these reasons they often fail at school. Courses for high school students with OMJ offer the opportunity to help them better manage their high school studies and the final school-leaving examination, which will generally contribute to their easier integration into society.
The first course has been continuing since September 2018 at the Marjánka Primary School in Prague 6 and since September 2019 the course has also been opened at the Lyčkovo náměstí Primary and Kindergarten in Prague 8. The Academic Grammar School and Language School offer intensive courses in teaching Czech as a second language to secondary school students. school with the right to a language test hl. m of Prague. The mentioned schools are well staffed, have an experiential foundation and have been actively approaching the integration of pupils for a long time. The whole concept is in accordance with the conceptual materials of the capital. m of Prague – The long-term intention of education and development of the education system of the capital m of Prague 2020-2024 and the Concept of the Capital m of Prague for the integration of foreigners.
