Higher education Zurich makes a contribution against the shortage of skilled workers
The seven universities in the Canton of Zurich offer a diverse and broad range of courses. Four out of five Zurich students choose to study in the canton. In addition, the university location of Zurich attracts numerous non-cantonal and international students: a quarter of all students in Switzerland study at a Zurich university.
Contribution to the shortage of skilled workers
Those eligible to study in Zurich choose a degree in mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology (MINT) as those from the rest of Switzerland. This applies to those who are entitled to study with a high school diploma as well as to those who are entitled to study with a vocational or specialist baccalaureate. The Canton of Zurich is thus making a single contribution to combating the shortage of skilled workers in general, especially in the STEM field.
Three quarters of bachelor’s students graduate within five years of starting their studies. Of the remaining quarter, a good half remains in college. The remaining people pursue any path outside of the universities or only resume their studies after an interruption.
Profit for the Zurich labor market
Irrespective of subject area and degree level, 94 percent of university graduates are employed five years after graduation (and two percent are not employed and are looking for a job). More than half of them work in the canton of Zurich. This proportion is particularly high among Zurich graduates. Five years after graduation, 80 percent of them have a job in the Zurich labor market.
For the first time in this form, the report “Hochschulplatz Zürich” examines the courses of study and transfers in the canton of Zurich using longitudinal data in the education sector (LABB) and the survey of university graduates (EHA) from the Federal Statistical Office.
