3 projects to improve traffic flow at the entrance to Monaco
Too often dense at rush hour, traffic between Nice and Monaco has been a major concern for many years. But several avenues are being studied to make traffic more fluid in the future. Zoom in on three of them.
1. The hopper of the Moyenne Corniche
With nearly 50,000 commuters arriving in Monaco every day from Nice or Menton, the Moyenne Corniche is subject to numerous daily traffic jams which increase the travel time of cross-border workers.
Faced with this road congestion, a funnel project was designed by the Principality’s public works department. The latter consisted of the creation of a mini-tunnel on the Moyenne Corniche, at the crossroads of Avenue Général-de-Gaulle. A project that does not thrill the mayor of Cap d’Ail, Xavier Beck.

“We are not in favor of this, given the considerable disruption caused by the work on this major axis dependent on the Principality, he explained to us. It is expected between twelve and eighteen months of construction and this work would have little impact on the reduction of morning traffic jams. Its only interest is to allow a faster absorption of traffic to leave the Principality at the end of the afternoon. »
An underground route that could allow motorists to save between four and seven minutes on their journey.
2. The Beausoleil motorway slip road
It is one of the most anticipated projects, but also the one that should arrive first. A new motorway ramp (known as Beausoleil but located in the town of La Turbie) will thus serve as an interchange point between the A8 motorway and the departmental network (RD 2564–Grande Corniche), making it possible to provide the air at other accesses to the Principality.
“It should also bring an improvement for employees coming from Nice” adds the edile of Cap d’Ail. Work on this project should be completed later this year.
3. Development of the hospital roundabout
As a result of this new motorway ramp, the increase in the flow of motorists in the hospital sector. To cope with this, the development of the roundabout will be carried out. The latter is about to be enlarged and moved higher than its current location.

“It is obvious that it would be more effective with the creation of a new wayadmits Xavier Beck, who proposed abandoning the 25-space parking lot between this roundabout and the exotic garden to make two incoming lanes and one outgoing. If this solution is implemented, it will be necessary to automatically replace the common parking lots lost by parking spaces in the new parking lot located near the exotic garden. »
The works should be completed when the Beausoleil ramp is open, either at the end of 2022 or at the latest at the beginning of 2023.
But also
A time announced in August 2021, the commissioning of a sea shuttle between the port of Nice and that of Cap d’Ail was finally postponed. This project planned to connect the two ports in just under 30 minutes, at the rate of 34 rotations per day, capable of transporting 1,200 people daily by sea.
The launch of this hybrid maritime shuttle could take place by the end of 2022. Very popular in large cities and in particular in Nice, as Nice-Presse revealsthe urban cable car is a means of transport that could also soon see the light of day around Monaco.
“It remains to define its route and its compatibility with the various administrative regulations and environmental constraints” cautiously appointed us the mayor of Cap d’Ail on this subject.
For Xavier Beck, one of the best solutions for relieving traffic congestion between the western Alpes-Maritimes and Monaco remains the creation of a Riviera metro. But the potential arrival of a metro line between the Riquier station, located in Nice-Est, and the Principality, would no longer be on the agenda. For the moment.
