László Papp: we are worthy of our former ancestors – with a video
Debrecen – The mayor pointed out: times are changing, Debrecen must always find the breaking points with which to guarantee the position of leader.
On the 11th of April, the day of the city of Debrecen, in 1693, Debrecen received the rank of a free royal city from King Lipót I of Hungary. Speaking of which, the guest of the Debrecen Television Public Affairs Extra program was Mayor László Papp.
“I believe that we are worthy of the former ancestors who took care of gaining the rank of market town in 1351 during the reign of King Louis the Great,” László Papp emphasized. He added that the city was facing a difficult crossroads, it had been balanced on the border of three empires for a long time after the country was divided into three parts, but Debrecen was a commercially strong city, which it could take advantage of.
The city lost its significance by the 1690s, the expulsion of the Turks, the restoration of the territory of the kingdom changed the geopolitical situation of the city, so the leaders had to move on, find a way to guarantee the development of the city, this required free royalism. city rank, one of the conditions for which was the readmission of Catholics, he recalled.
The mayor pointed out that times are changing, Debrecen must always find breakpoints to stabilize its regional leadership.
– I believe that Debrecen chose a good path when we announced an economic development policy. Debrecen has become a sought-after, internationally recognized city – said László Papp.
As has been said, the idea of the great Debrecen was born in 1909, causing a small storm among the larger rural towns.
“Even then, the ideology was assumed, which assumed a great regional power, which is getting better today, and this idea seems more realistic,” the mayor emphasized. He pointed out that we can revive this line of thought, as by the end of the decade the city will be one of the most important economic power centers in the Carpathian Basin, and a similar position is expected in the field of education.
Debrecen is also developing further from a cultural point of view: they want to create a concert hall in the second half of the decade, the Csokonai Forum will be handed over in May, and the renovated Csokonai Theater next year, László Papp recalled. He added that Hungary will organize a theater Olympics next year, in which Debrecen and the two theaters will play an important role.
– The emphasis will shift in the coming years, the major economic development processes will be established soon, by the middle of the decade, other points of development must be found. Education and culture can be the focus, our next task is to develop creative industry strategies – László Papp explained. He added that the epidemic had significantly overshadowed the recent period, as well as the Russo-Ukrainian war.
– We sympathize with Ukraine, I do not think that a conflict should be handled in this way, a negotiated solution should be sought. These factors affect how positive the future of Debrecen will be, the mayor pointed out, and expressed hope that the conflict would be resolved in the foreseeable future.
“None of our projects had to be changed or postponed, large investments are still being made in the city, financial resources have been provided,” the mayor emphasized.
László Papp thanked the voters: as he said, he was reassured by the results of the elections that they could proceed with the improvements according to the original plans and promises.
Referring to the Museum of Natural History, he said they had been given the necessary resources to have the preparations examined by the city. The planned location remains Oláh Gábor Street: the museum will be located in the city center, in an area surrounded by forest.
Speaking of the festive assembly, the mayor said it is a great pride every year to shake hands with the people who have done a lot for the city and congratulated the winners in particular.
