The councilors dealt with the renaming on the proposal of the Club of Friends of Žižkov. Such challenges have arisen in the past. Last year, city hall officials said it would be too complicated because there are about 7,000 people living on the streets. The town hall at least had a table placed in the street explaining the context of the life of the controversial Soviet marshal.
City councilor Pavel Křeček (STAN) has now stated that the management of the city district is still aware of the complexity of the step.
“This is the longest street in Prague 3 and one of the largest rows in the whole of Prague, which is characterized by natural persons and is also the seat of companies and legal entities, for which renaming can mean many problems. That is why we want to launch an extensive information campaign and look for the most feasible and maximally comfortable solution for citizens, “he said.
The town hall wants to find out the opinion of local residents, for example, through a questionnaire survey.
According to the plan, the street should bear the name of the builder and first mayor of the then still independent Žižkov, Karel Hartig. At the level of the city district, the plan will be discussed by the council, and if approved, the town hall will then send a proposal to the municipal topography commission. Based on the proposals, it makes recommendations to the city council, which decides on the naming or renaming of streets and public spaces in the metropolis.
Marshal Ivan Stepanovich Konev (1897 to 1973) was a Russian military leader and Soviet marshal. At the end of the Second World War, Prague, parts of Poland, Silesia and Saxony were threatened with liberation. He also led the bloody suppression of the uprising in Hungary and worked in Berlin during the construction of the Berlin Wall.
The management of Prague 6 had the marshal’s statue removed from Interbrigade Square in Bubeneč last April. Against were the Russian embassy, communists or various pro-Russian associations and activists. Prague has also recently renamed part of Korunovační Street near the Russian Embassy in Prague 6 to Ukrainian Heroes in connection with the current war in Ukraine.
