Lyon take a correction from Toulon
The battle for the Top 14 play-offs is totally relaunched, with a big blow signed by a team from Toulon in full resurrection and victorious in Lyon 43 to 10.
Toulon lost a correction to Lyon (43-10) and got back into the race for qualification for the final stages by winning a third consecutive victory this Saturday at the Stade Gerland, on behalf of the 22nd day of Top 14. Thanks to this second improved success, outside, the Toulonnais are in eighth place and come back to three points behind LOU Rugby (6th), totally overwhelmed and humiliated, and left the field under the whistles.
A series that hurts a lot in the race for the play-offs
Beaten for the third time in a row, the second at home this season, the Lyonnais stalled at the worst time. They are now under threat from Racing which hosts Stade Français on Sunday evening, and sees Clermont (7th), like the Toulonnais, chasing them in the standings.
Despite an entry try scored by scrum-half Baptiste Couilloud (3-7. 5th), the Lyonnais never existed and the RCT gradually laid hands on the match before routing their opponents. After a try from the Argentinian third center line, Facundo Isa (11-10. 34th), Toulon came close to knocking out their host, but the try from the New Zealand center, Duncan Paia’aua, was refused after arbitration video (37th).
Strange match for Mignoni
It was gone. South African winger Cheslin Kolbe killed the suspense and the last hopes of Lyon after returning from the locker room, on a ball offered by Lyon winger Noa Nakaitaci (16-10. 43rd). Center Julien Hériteau then scored twice (48th, 60th) to offer an improved success, unexpected at kick-off, but logical given the face of the match, before winger Gabin Villière added a fifth try again transformed by Carbonel (76th) who concluded the meeting by passing a penalty of 45 meters (43-10, 80th).
Faced with the former but also future team of their manager, Pierre Mignoni, who already formalized his return to the RCT several weeks ago, the Lyonnais were overwhelmed. Between lost throws on the sidelines, scrimmage penalties, and hectic rucks, they were deprived of the ball and made one of their worst copies at home in a long time.
