The municipality has prepared an exhibition to mark the hundredth anniversary of the founding of Greater Prague Company News Pražská Drbna
The Prague City Hall and the Archive of the Capital City of Prague have prepared the exhibition Greater Prague – 100 Years Since the Merger of Prague with the Suburbs. The exhibition is open to the public from 1 to 30 April 2022 in front of the New Town Hall on Mariánské náměstí and shows the circumstances of the expansion of Prague.
“One hundred years of great Prague is a big event and I wish our beautiful city only the best for this anniversary,” said in a press release the mayor Zdeněk Hřib (Pirates).
“The Greater Prague exhibition is not only a celebration of the founding of the capital as a metropolis, but it is also a memory of our predecessor in the city leadership. Their efforts to manage Prague comprehensively as a whole are a great inspiration for us to continue their work and motivate the city for the benefit of all Praguers, “ described in a statement to journalists Councilor for Culture, Exhibitions and Tourism Hana Třeštíková (Prague itself).
The outdoor exhibition commemorates one hundred years since 1922, when Prague was connected with 37 nearby and more distant suburbs to the Capital City of Prague.
The panels present the development of Prague in the period between the two world wars. The authors of the exhibition deliberately chose this time period, because it was then that the capital was commonly called the phrase Greater Prague. “At the same time, we managed to turn from an initially disparate unit made up of variously developed towns and villages into a representative city with a thriving economy and extensive housing, connected by transport infrastructure and networks, which provided the population with health and social and cultural and sports activities.” described the municipality spokesman Vít Hofman.
The panels describe building a strong economic capital, expanding city property or building infrastructure. Visitors to the exhibition will also see key moments in the history of modern Prague, such as the economic and political crisis in the 1930s and the consequences of war and post-war developments.
“Prague has already experienced a lot, in the last century, for example, we spent more years in a dictatorship than outside it, right at the beginning of this century, our city was hit by an unprecedented flood. During this election period, we again faced two large-scale and unprecedented crises in the city’s leadership, first the covid-19 pandemic and then the influx of refugees due to the Russian war aggression in Ukraine. After every crisis in the past, Prague enjoyed a huge economic and construction boom. Even now, I see this as a great opportunity for our city and I believe that my vision of further successful development of Prague will fulfill, ” Zdeněk Hřib added in the press release.
