The situation of the Gypsies was presented in Debrecen
Presentations on the development, current situation and vision of the situation of the Roma in Hungary over the past ten years were expected at an event for Roma congregations at the Meteor Cinema Festival on Saturday.
– Approximately 15,000 Gypsies live in Debrecen, 7,000 children study in the educational institution. When we were working with local gypsy leaders at the time, we set ourselves the goal of making this work harmonious and productive. We managed to implement several programs that went beyond the national initiatives at that time – Lajos Kósa recalled. As he said, several gypsy settlements were successfully liquidated during the programs, such as the “Lemon Island” at the József Nagy-Sándor monument or the Darabos and Jókai streets. Pac and the Nagysándor settlement also started to develop. – The Roma communities and their leaders, as well as the church, were of great help to us. The city has something to do with the people who have been able to fit in where they have moved, he added.
The compatriot emphasized that the best integration programs were implemented together with the churches. He pointed out that while at the national level the proportion of church educational institutions is 15 percent, in Debrecen it is over 20 percent. He also emphasized that Roma young people have the opportunity to attend a bilingual vocational school and that many of them are successfully entering the labor market. Regarding next week’s election, he added:
the ruling party aims to build a work-based society; strengthening and expanding family benefits and ensuring the safety of residents.

– My community is characterized by low education, unskilledness, lack of real representation and feelings of poverty, even here in Debrecen, in the peripheral districts. It is hopelessness, hopelessness, climbing, and what is not found is cooperation – said István Aba-Horváth, the equal opportunities officer of the City of Debrecen.
We can say a lot, but we cannot say that the Hungarian government is not trying not to help. But we can also see that the outstretched hand is worth as much as it is accepted
He added. In his speech, he praised the government’s efforts to catch up with the Roma, to ensure the security of the country and to support families.
– What we did yesterday is little. You have to move up a level. It is not enough for the Directorate-General for Social Opportunities to come up with good programs. It will only grow the distance between us. We also need to move in knowledge, experience, cooperation, in the formulation of common goals. We have to forget that I don’t get it, there is no possibility – István Aba-Horváth emphasized to his audience.

Attila Sztojka, the government commissioner responsible for Roma relations, recalled that not only was there no effective, consistent Roma catch-up before 2010, but that a certain group in society had decided to play God for life and death, referring to Roma killings.
“When we talk about the results, we have to look at where we started and where we got to. Since 2010, the process of rebuilding an entire country has begun. It was Fidesz that put the Roma case on the map in the EU. Hungary said that goals and results must be produced, he emphasized in his speech. He added that since then 50 more Roma have been working in the country, and the public work program not only meets the target, but Germany already wants to take over the employment of settled migrants.

Zsolt Nagy, head of the Cívis Social Center, pointed out that there are people everywhere in the world who live in poverty. There are such people in Hungary as well, but this does not mean that the country is poor either, as the Government has the opportunity to provide its citizens over the age of 18 with a free daily hot meal and free public catering.
– On average, 10 percent of the population uses the public kitchen. Over the years, a circle of caregivers has emerged who really need it. In Hajdú-Bihar it is 45 thousand people. Thirty percent of those who use our service are retired, 20 percent need it for some health reason, 45 percent are low-skilled, and only 5 percent are those who need it for convenience, he said.
