The winners & losers of the current season
In the Bundesliga, Eintracht can still have hopes of the Champions League after a season with some ups and downs. With seven games to go, SGE is seven points behind RB Leipzig. It is six points behind Hoffenheim, who are sixth in the table.
Things were much more consistent in the Europa League under new coach Oliver Glasner. So far, Eintracht has only marched through Europe and has the cracker duel with FC Barcelona in the quarter-finals in front of the chest in early/mid-April.
Before the final sprint, we take a look at the winners and losers of the current season during the international break:
After a weak start to the season, the 31-year-old has more than caught up. Trapp has been showing consistently strong performances for months and is a strong support for the SBU. In the DFB team, he seems to have clearly consolidated his place as number three.
The Brazilian is increasingly becoming a top performer on the defensive. Under Glasner, the 22-year-old is absolutely set and could even take on the role of defense chief in the medium term. Tuta’s duel strength is good for Eintracht!
The 24-year-old Croatian joined Dinamo Zagreb on loan at the end of August 2021. Eintracht has a purchase option for the summer – and should be very happy about it. Jakic quickly increased his market value during his time in Frankfurt (to 7.5 million euros now).
In central midfield he has overtaken the injured captain Sebastian Rode. Jakic is a tough duel runner who leads with commitment and mentality. Exactly such a type of player was needed for the midfield center!
Jakic’ partner’s name is Djibril Sow. The Swiss is playing his best season in Frankfurt again and has improved significantly as Jakic’s side, who is somewhat offensive. Dynamism, ball security, great passes to the top – Sow delivers the complete package this season. He would definitely be one of the top favorites when it comes to Eintracht player of the season!
Eintracht invested seven million euros and high hopes in the 22-year-old Dane last summer. At the beginning of his time in Frankfurt, Lindstrom still had difficulties adjusting to the Bundesliga. But now he is set in attacking midfield behind the striker on Borré.
Why? Very easily! Lindstrom is always able to decide a game with an extraordinary action. If he improves his efficiency in the end, he could mature into the next internationally coveted top star at Eintracht.
Ansgar Knauff has only played six games for Eintracht – and is still one of the winners. The BVB loan, actually at home on the offensive wing, was converted by Glasner into a rail player. With success! The speed of the 20-year-old is worth its weight in gold for the SBU game – and has solved the problems in this position for the time being.
If Knauff continues to adapt to the position, he could remain a very important factor for Eintracht, at least until 2023.
It is well known that where there are winners, there are also losers. Three of them are right side options. Danny da Costa didn’t manage to take his chances there after his return from Mainz. His farewell in the summer is already sealed. It is possible that he will then be drawn back to Mainz free of charge.
Erik Durm also seems to have no future at Eintracht. His father (and adviser) recently called for public talks. The 2014 world champion is no longer able to play under Glasner. Despite the contract until 2023, the summer will result in a separation.
Almamy Touré is not faring much better than Durm. The 25-year-old made only one appearance in 2022 and has recently been missing from the matchday squad twice. As with Durm, Glasner no longer seems to rely on Touré. If a potential customer knocks in the summer, the 25-year-old should be gone.
Stefan Ilsanker is definitely gone at the end of the season. Sports director Stefan Krösche has already stated that the 32-year-old’s contract will not be extended.
In the Bundesliga, the defensive all-rounder is only used sporadically as a joker. Ilsanker was not even registered for the knockout round of the Europa League.
Aymen Barkok will also leave Eintracht for sure. His free transfer to Mainz 05 at the end of the season has already been confirmed. The SGE homegrown player hardly got any playing time under Glasner and has been completely absent from the Bundesliga match day squad since the turn of the year. Should be a quiet farewell for the 23-year-old.
The 24-year-old Dutchman was loaned out by Atalanta on Deadline Day in the summer. In Frankfurt at the time there were great calls for an edgy centre-forward. Lammers should fix the problems in the storm center.
But the lanky attacker could never fulfill the hopes. Instead, through some unfortunate actions and poor play, he became the bogeyman among the fans. In any case, two goals in 20 games are not a quota that Lämmer recommended for continued employment.
Recommending is such a thing for fellow striker Ragnar Ache. The 23-year-old is currently out with another muscle injury. Since arriving from Rotterdam in the summer of 2020, the former U21 international has missed 35 competitive games for action. He has just 17 appearances in almost two Eintracht years (one goal, one assist).
With his contract running until 2025, a summer loan could be best for both sides.
