Juventus surprise Lyon, Arsenal snatch a draw against Wolfsburg
Juventus Turin confirmed their rise to power by winning 2-1 at home against Olympique Lyonnais, and Arsenal snatched the draw against Wolfsburg (1-1) in London on Wednesday in the quarter-finals first leg of the Women’s Champions League.
The return matches will be played on Thursday March 31.
At the Allianz Stadium in Turin, the Italians, aware of the performance, declared their victory as if there were no return match, against the Lyonnaises, seven-time winners of this C1.
The French had opened the scoring with their American Catarina Macario (8th), but the Turinese overturned the meeting with goals from Cristiana Girelli (71st) and Agnese Bonfantini (83rd), while Lyon had been playing with ten since the exclusion of the Australian Ellie Carpenter in the 62nd minute for a foul on Valentina Cernoia.
At the Emirates Stadium in London, home of the Gunners, the Germans from Wolfsburg opened the scoring by Tabea Wassmuth (19th), her ninth but this season in the Champions League, where she leads the scoring charts. But the English, very combative, were equalized in the 89th minute by Carlotte Wubben-Moy.
The first two quarters on Tuesday saw away victories for Paris SG against Bayern Munich (2-1) and the big favorite, defending champion FC Barcelona, at their rival Real Madrid (3-1 ).
