US envoy announces Russian disinformation campaign at UN
On Friday, before the meeting of the UN Security Council, the US Ambassador to this organization, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, made a special statement that warned about the spread of misinformation in Russia about the situation in Ukraine.”
The warning was sounded due to the fact that Russia included in the agenda of the Security Council a discussion of the topic “US biological laboratories in Ukraine”.
A special statement about Russian disinformation was made on behalf of six countries: the US, UK, France, Norway, Ireland and Albania.
In particular, the document says that on Friday, Russia is “again trying to use the UN to launder its disinformation, spread its propaganda and justify its unprovoked and brutal attack on Ukraine. We know this because this scenario has already been used. Literally a week ago, on the same pretexts, a meeting of the Security Council was already convened, at which we heard a whole series of pompous and ridiculous lies.”
As expected by the US ambassador, the Security Council meeting on Friday and the widespread Russian lies “are designed for one purpose: to absolve themselves of responsibility for the destruction and liquidation of a humanitarian catastrophe.”
Linda Thomas-Greenfield believes it’s important to remember that “it is Moscow, not Ukraine, that has long supported the biological weapons program, in violation of international law.” Also behind Moscow, and not behind Ukraine, is the history of the use of chemical weapons, and this history is well documented. It was in Moscow that the current accidental war in Ukraine began.”
The US Ambassador to the UN that Russia, for its disinformation, must be held accountable, and what other countries count must tell the truth so that “Russian lies and disinformation will run into the underlying facts. It must also be said that Russia is abusing its duties and privileges as members of the Security Council.” The UN’s mandate is to conduct an investigation to further the goals of the foreign service, Thomas-Greenfield said.
The statement also said that “the undermining of the mission in Russia and the implementation of the UN and the horrific campaign against the Ukrainian people are deeply shameful.”
