During the siege of Budapest during World War II, the stage and auditorium of the Opera House were empty, but its cellar system turned into a shelter, where the “cellar artists” sometimes gave impromptu concerts, János Áder recalled in his opening speech.
“How much this building has seen, how much this building has gone through: 138 years of wars and revolutions, conquerors and changing forms of government, occupation and regained freedom. reminded the head of state.
However, as he added, the value always won in the end, sooner or later those who wanted to cultivate the Opera the most, the most demandingly, won. Those who knew that the building had become smaller than the Vienna Opera House by the will of Franz Joseph, but were more beautiful, knew that the performances presented here had to compete with the best in Europe, he said.
János Áder emphasized: “nowadays, when our cultural institutions are rising, renewing and beautifying, it is worth recalling what we believe in when we build or renovate a home worthy of the arts”.
One of Europe’s imposing collections of sculptures has finally won a worthy home within the walls of the renovated Csillagerőd in Komárom. . Vigadó, the Romanian hall of the Museum of Fine Arts, the garden of the Hungarian National Museum or the Miklós Ybl Castle Garden Bazaar, libraries, theaters, museums, houses of culture and exhibition halls were given new homes in the capital, in Hungarian-inhabited areas and across the border, the head of state said.
János Áder added that the numerous cultural investments of recent years were necessary “because it is all uplifting, because it is soul-enhancing, because it gives a scale to a person; it preserves value, offers experience, and teaches respect and tradition”.
Szilveszter Ókovács, the director general of the Opera House, asked whether when visitors enter the building held as the masterpiece of Miklós Ybl, the question is asked: why is it so beautiful?
According to the director general, the answer is simple, but there are many elements: for example, because of the children’s soloists, the students of the Opera House’s ballet institute, the ballet dancers, the choir artists, the conductors and, last but not least, the singers. But the house is so beautiful because of the painters, the craftsmen, and even the video and light designers, he remarked.
The Opera House is not just a monument, but a theater, he said.
Szilveszter Ókovács thanked Prime Minister Viktor Orbán for his “long-term trust”, the advertising government, the investor Városliget Zrt., The designer Zoboki Architects and contractors, perseverance and patience of colleagues.
The Opera House, which has been renovated after a comprehensive reconstruction, will open with a five-day festival. Prior to Saturday’s opening gala, student premieres were held on Fridays and Saturdays, and on Sunday, the audience will be waiting for the audience with the premiere version of Ferenc Erkel’s opera László Hunyadi and his ballet MacMillan Mayerling on Monday.
