The new season of the Prague Botanical Garden has started with an exhibition of orchids – Cysnews
The Prague Botanical Garden has entered its 53rd season, and visitors have something to look forward to. The official opening took place on March 3, 2022 at the opening of the Orchids of Six Continents exhibition in the Fata Morgana Greenhouse. Actresses Vica Kerekes, Klára Issová and Bára Kodetová Šporclová and singer Marta Jandová became patrons of the new season. They are also patrons of the current orchid exhibition. This year, visitors will once again see a number of popular exhibitions and events.
New season in the Botanical Garden in Troy
On orchids in April for the esteemed exhibition Butterflies, focused on detail. In June, lovers of bonsai and Japanese culture will be present, and there will also be popular events such as the vintage, an exhibition of pumpkin arrangements and Halloween celebrations. The botanical garden is undergoing a change this year, in the short term it may mean less complications for visitors, however, the goal of these projects is a long-term improvement of visitor comfort and experience. For the first time since the opening of the Fata Morgana greenhouse, the entire complex will be united – the greenhouse will connect a new bridge with outdoor exhibits. The Botanical Garden is entering a new season with the ambition to exceed the number of visitors last year, more than 315,000 of them came to the garden area.
“Despite all the complications that have accompanied us recently, we have entered our new season optimistically. We are preparing exhibitions and events for visitors, which are among the most popular, whether it is an ongoing exhibition of orchids, the upcoming exhibition of butterflies, a competition show of bonsai, or a traditional vintage. We have also prepared smaller events. A series of professional lectures is currently underway, we are preparing guided tours with our curators, as well as music walks. This season will be varied, “says Bohumil Černý, director of the Botanical Garden of the capital. m of Prague.
“Last week we started the 53rd season together in our botanical garden. The Botanical Garden is an important part of the life and culture of the capital city of Prague and I very much appreciate the fact that we manage to modernize its premises and unlimited projects that bring visitors more comfort, more experiences and also contribute to the education of adults and children. Whether it is the interconnection of the botanical garden complex, the newly emerging exhibition pavilion, or the planned exhibition of plant evolution, “says Petr Hlubuček, Deputy Mayor of the Capital City of Prague, on behalf of the founder.
A season full of flowers and experiences
The Troja Botanical Garden is preparing a number of events for this year. Orchid lovers will find something to their liking until March 20. The Orchids of the Six Continents exhibition, which introduces visitors to these plants from all over the world, presents the most interesting species and different ways of orchids, not only in the kitchen but also in for example in traditional Chinese medicine. The beautiful flowers in the Fata Morgana tropical greenhouse will be replaced in April by the Butterflies exhibition, focusing on the detail that will highlight the beauty of the butterfly’s body. Several thousand butterfly pupae will arrive in Prague again. The exhibition takes place from April 8 to May 22. In short, admirers of bonsai art and Japanese culture and wine lovers from the vineyards of St. Klára, a number of wine events are being prepared for them, including the traditional vintage. In summer, together with the botanical garden, those interested can also travel to Cyprus through a photo exhibition. You can find a complete list of events on the botanical garden website.
Modern complex for visitors
The modernization of the complex continues in Troja this year as well. The Fata Morgana greenhouse entrance area with a restaurant and modern terraces with flower beds and features was completed during the year. In the summer, the construction of a multifunctional building in Nádvorní Street was started, where an exhibition pavilion is being built, a new entrance area with facilities for visitors, but also facilities for employees of the botanical garden. The complex also includes a relaxation zone, which connects to the Ornamental Garden. This year, for the first time in history, the outdoor exhibitions will be connected to the Fata Morgana greenhouse – the construction of a bridge over the entrance connecting Troja and the Bohnice housing estate is underway. Thanks to this, visitors will be able to comfortably walk through the entire complex. At the beginning of 2022, the reconstruction of the vineyard house in Vinice sv. Klára, which will be supplemented by a new tasting space. New green exhibits are also being created in. A novelty is, for example, the exposition of endangered species, a section dedicated to Japanese fog forests is being prepared, as well as a demonstration of plant evolution. “This year we continue to modernize the area, we are implementing projects at the same time, so I apologize that sometimes these buildings can bring complications when moving in the garden. However, most of the work should be completed this year or next, and in the long run, these new projects should bring visitors more comfort, “adds the director of the Botanical Garden of the Capital City of Prague. m Prague Bohumil Černý.
A year 2021 full of challenges
Activities of the Botanical Garden of the Capital m of Prague was affected by the coronavirus pandemic in 2021. The garden was completely closed from the end of 2020 until April 12, 2021, and the Fata Morgana greenhouse had to remain closed for a month longer. Nevertheless, the garden managed to cope with this situation. The popular spring exhibitions have moved to another period and the visitor has not closed the Troja Garden complex. In 2021, over 315,000 of them came. That is 120,000 more visitors than in 2020, and the number of visitors was equal to 2016, when it was open all year round. The most successful periods were September and October.
From March to the end of October, the Prague Botanical Garden is open every day from 9:00 to 19:00. The Fata Morgana greenhouse has almost the same opening hours, it is closed only on Mondays. Visitors can go for refreshments in the restaurant at the Fata Morgana greenhouse or in the Wine Shop of St. Klára, who will be temporarily found on the premises of a former bistro in the Ornamental Garden complex. The wine shop is open daily from 10:00 to 19:30. The Botanical Garden has unified admission, adults pay CZK 150, children under 15 have admission for CZK 100 and children under three can enter the complex for free.

International Riesling Day 13 March
Riesling – one of our proven wines and an exceptional variety, whose journey to the throne was a bit winding. Not every variety is lucky on International Day, when we can officially celebrate its uniqueness and sovereign position in the wine sky. In the Wine Shop of St. Kláry, we are preparing an extended offer of Rieslings from our vineyard.
Butterflies, focused on detail 7. 4. – 22. 5.
During this year’s exhibition in the Fata Morgana greenhouse, visitors will admire, as every year, the beauty of the winged butterflies, the charming flight and the mysterious transformation of the pupa into an adult butterfly. Other details and structures of the butterfly body are also less interesting. We will reveal not only the structure of butterfly wings, but we will also show the eyes, legs or tentacles of caterpillars and adult butterflies. We will focus on butterfly tusks, their interesting structure and what a caterpillar’s mouth looks like. Over five thousand individuals will perform during the exhibition.
