Boris Johnson said Putin had reckoned
London – In the twelve days since Ukraine’s inception, it has become clear that Russian President Vladimir Putin has been held accountable, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Monday.
Johnson discussed the situation in Ukraine and further sanctions measures with Canadian Prime Ministers Justin Trudeau and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte in London during the day. After the talks, for a joint press on Downing Street, the British prime minister said Putin had underestimated the resistance of the Ukrainians, underestimated the leader of Ukraine and likewise underestimated the unity of the West.
He said 39 UN member states, including Britain, Canada and the Netherlands, had voted to bring Putin’s actions in Ukraine before the International Criminal Court in The Hague.
This is the largest joint action since its inception in The Hague and will allow the forum’s prosecutor to investigate, so that the Russian president’s judicial rights do not go unpunished, the British government said.
Johnson announced that the British government had approved another £ 175 million (HUF 84.4 billion) in financial aid to Ukraine on Monday; of which £ 100 million will be paid directly by London to the Ukrainian government.
The value of Britain’s support to Ukraine since the beginning of the crisis has risen to £ 400 million (HUF 193 billion), the British prime minister said.
At a press conference, all three heads of government said that Europe’s dependence on Russian energy supplies needed to be dramatically reduced.
Both Johnson and Rutte pointed out that this was clearly not available overnight.
The Dutch prime minister has said that sanctions on Russian energy supplies do not have to create an energy supply crisis in Europe, including in Ukraine.
Asked by a journalist about this, Boris Johnson said: the fact that differences in different European countries depend on Russian energy supplies should be borne in mind, and it would not be easy to shut down crude oil and gas pipelines overnight.
According to Johnson, the task is for everyone to move in the same direction, that is, to reduce their dependence on Russian hydrocarbon-based energy sources, and there is no inconsistency in this. However, it is clear that there will be a transitional period during which energy supplies to replace Russian supplies will have to be sought elsewhere, the British prime minister said. Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte added that the painful reality is that Europe is still heavily dependent on Russian natural gas and crude oil supplies.
Rutte said forcing European energy companies to cut all business ties with Russia now would have measurable consequences across Europe, including Ukraine.
He added that dependence on Russian energy sources needs to be dramatically reduced, but this will take time and can only be achieved step by step.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canada had already banned imports of Russian crude oil. He stressed that the volume of these imports has so far been negligible, and Canada as a whole is self-sufficient in energy.
At the end of Monday’s talks in London, the three countries issued a joint statement calling on Russia to take an immediate ceasefire in order to allow the civilian population of Ukraine and the movement of food and medicine to move safely. According to the British-Canadian-Dutch coin, Russia is an extensive and indiscriminate military force against the civilian population in Ukraine, although this is prohibited by international human rights law.
The three countries are working tirelessly to launch an investigation into Ukraine’s violations of international law, gather evidence and bring the perpetrators to justice, according to a joint statement issued in London.
