Winter 2021/22 was the fourth warmest in the center of Prague since 1775

Prague – This year’s meteorological winter in Prague’s Klementinum was the fourth warmest since 1775. The average temperature from the beginning of December to the end of February in the center of Prague was 4.6 degrees Celsius. It thus ranks among the two percent of the warmest winters in the last 247 years, states Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMI). February this year was also unusually warm.
It refers to the period from December 1 to the end of February as meteorological winter. The average temperature in winter 2021/22 in Klementinum exceeded 4.5 degrees Celsius. It was thus 2.3 degrees warmer than the reference value calculated on the basis of data from 1991 to 2020. Compared to the long-term average from 1775 to 2014, this time the winter was even 4.3 degrees Celsius warmer.
So far, the warmest meteorological winter with an average temperature of 5.8 degrees was recorded in Klementinum at the turn of 2006 and 2007. The second warmest was winter 2019/2020 with an average temperature of 5.1 degrees and the third winter 2015/16 with an average temperature of 4.9 degrees. This year’s winter ranked fourth with an average of 4.6 degrees Celsius
On the contrary, the coldest winter in the last 247 years was measured by meteorologists in the center of Prague at the turn of 1829 and 1830. The average temperature then dropped to minus 6.1 degrees Celsius.
February also contributed to the unusually warm winter this year. The average temperature in the second calendar month reached 6.2 degrees Celsius. “February 2022 ranked fourth out of 248 February since 1775, which means that it is among the two percent warmest Februarys in the measurement period,” said meteorologist Pavel Jůza.
The warmest February ever was measured in Klementinum the year before last. The average monthly temperature then climbed to almost seven degrees. The site was February 1990 with an average second and third third of 6.5 degrees February 15 with an average temperature of 6.3 degrees Celsius. The coldest February since 1775 was experienced by people in the center of Prague in 929 with an average temperature of minus 11 degrees.
Compared to the normal from 1991 to 2020, it was 3.5 degrees warmer in February this year. The deviation from the long-term average from 1775 to 2014 was plus 5.5 degrees.
