Finally ready for ID. Sum
Volkswagen had no concrete plans around ID. Buzz as they showed from prototypes. But it quickly became clear that this just had to go into series production.
You might be walking around believing that electric cars are something new? How wrong it is, the legendary Bulli car for Volkswagen shows.
50 years ago, the Germans brought something very special to a trade fair in Frankfurt. It was admittedly a Bulli, but not an ordinary one. It was an all-electric version that the engineers had made.
The car is more precisely called Volkswagen T2 Elektro Transporter, and was developed together with Bosch, Varta and RWE – all German electronics companies.
Elektro Transporter had a small DC motor mounted at the rear, and it managed to produce 22 horsepower. It went in lead batteries, and the package weighed a solid 850 kilos – more than a Bubble at the time.
In total, Elektro Transporter weighed a full 2.2 tons, and 120 such test cars were made. The range was 85 kilometers.
It was Volkswagen’s first proper attempt to make electric cars, which was followed by an all-electric Golf in 1976.
This electric setting has culminated with the ID series, where already ID.3 and ID.4 are in place here in Norway.
An ID car that many have been waiting a long time for the electric version of the legendary Bulli, because it has been a year since Volkswagen showed off a concept called Buzz.
It happened more exactly in 2017, and the feedback was so formidable that Volkswagen quickly decided to go for this one.
Already in 2019, that prototype was visiting Norway, but since then it has not been really that fast.
But now the wait is soon over, because in a couple of weeks it will finally be ready for the world premiere of the electric car, which will come as both a minibus in the form of five seats and a van in the form of three seats.
ID. Buzz now performs the most systematic tests in cities such as Barcelona, Paris, London, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Hamburg and Hanover.
– Before we start full production of ID. Buzz is these tests with vehicles that practically match the ultimate full-production specifications, and provide us with indispensable information for the final fine-tuning, says Kai Grünitz, Head of Vehicle Development at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.
The good news is that Buzzen does not look so much different from the one shown in 2017, and continues elements from the legendary T1 model – the original Bulli.
This includes short body covers, maximum utilization of space, the classic division of the vehicle’s body design into an upper and lower level – and the familiar front with its V-shape.
And just like the original Bulli, it also has ID. Buzz rear wheel drive.
Like ID.3 and ID.4, it also becomes ID. Buzz put together on the new MEB platform for the Volkswagen group, and is equipped with a battery with a net capacity of 77 kWh.
The engine has 201 horsepower and a torque of 310 Nm, the top speed is 145 km / h and the turning radius is just over 11 meters.
The Buzzen is 4.71 meters long and has a wheelbase of as much as 2.99 meters, almost like the latest generation of Volkswagen Transporter has. And it is a car of 4.90 meters in length.
When it comes to height, the Buzz is 1.94 meters high, while the width is 1.99 meters excluding side mirrors.
All of this provides ample interior space, and the 5-seater can actually take as much as 1,121 liters of luggage even with all the seats filled by people. Buzz Cargo, on the other hand, has a load capacity of 3.9 cubic meters.
Like their ID sisters, ID also comes. Buzz with a variety of appliances and new technology, and can also help be updated wirelessly so that it actually gets better over the years.
But even though the world premiere is now only a few weeks away, one only has to wait a bit for the electric Bulli version.
Production is to take place during the first half of the year, and the European launch will take place during the harvest.
And so it happens 50 years after Volkswagen took its first electric steps, but this time it is fortunately not about a range of 85 kilometers.
How long time. Buzz exact wheels Volkswagen has not yet said, but we can probably expect a range that may approach 400 kilometers.
Here are pictures of a camouflaged Volkswagen ID. Buzz, a car that will have its world premiere on March 9.
