Danish police will investigate Chinese-made surveillance cameras
The background for the fear is, among other things, the revelation from Italian Rai TV, which has sent data from Italy to a Chinese IP address.
According to several media outlets, the company Hikvisions and Dahua’s cameras have been used to monitor and use face recognition of Uighurs and other Muslim minorities in China. Both products are blacklisted in the United States as products not available for purchase. They are also banned in the UK.
The Danish national police say they do not feel safe on the Chinese-produced surveillance cameras in the country and say they are investigating and possibly replacing them.
In the police districts alone, there are a total of at least 160 cameras. Aarhus has over 300 cameras set up from Chinese Hikvision, and Copenhagen has 71 from the same manufacturer.
– The National Police is aware that it can be a security risk, as it is not possible to guarantee that cameras do not contain hidden departures, the National Police writes in a response to the Folketing.
The company itself denies the allegations and writes in a statement that they take both cyber security and human rights seriously.
The Police Intelligence Service has previously said that they have become “known with specific vulnerable” by using specific cameras from the manufacturer Hikvision.
