Footage from the rescue shows a man standing under a large container ship near the place where the steering rod of the rudder enters the boat. The fire brigade was attacked, but in the meantime the workers who were working on quay 420 at Churchilldok rolled up their sleeves.
With the help of a container crane that was extended to full length, the stowaway under the ship could be reached. The man climbed onto the crane and was rescued from his precarious position.
“When we arrived on site, the man had just been helped ashore by dock workers and a customs officer,” says the Antwerp Fire Brigade Zone. “A second person had hit dry land earlier.” According to witnesses, the person had gotten out of the dock under his own power.
The two men are believed to have been stowaways, according to initial information. The ship they passed around was the MSC Oriane, which had come to Antwerp from San Pedro in the Ivory Coast. Saturday afternoon it moored in the Churchill dock.
