In the Republic of Moldova, if you got drunk and the police caught you, you have to stay at the morgue for a day
The Republic of Moldova has implemented a re-education program for drunk drivers, a program that has greatly reduced recidivism, reports libertatea.ro. Two sessions of this program, called “Drink and Drive”. involves visits to the morgue.
So, if you got drunk and got caught by the police, a day awaits you at the morgue – this is one of the necessary measures of the Drink and Drive program.
This is a probationary program for the re-education of drivers in the Republic of Moldova who have committed drunk crimes. It was developed four years ago, within the Drink & Drive Moldova project, implemented by the Institute of Criminal Reforms in partnership with the Probation Services of Moldova, Romania and the Netherlands, financially supported by the Dutch Embassy in Bucharest.
How did you get to the morgue? “We had a fairly high recidivism rate and a steady increase in drunk driving cases,” Andrei Iavorschi, director of the National Probation Inspectorate (INP) in Moldova, told libertatea.ro.
By 2018, the recurrence rate was over 40% -50%, Iavorschi explained. Nearly half of the drivers caught driving repeated the act.
