Birds are already returning to Lithuania: “Spring is coming according to their perception”
Although only in the middle of February, in the village of Buckūnai, Lazdijai district, spring views and sounds. A flock of geese and other birds roam the flooded meadows. The director of Meteliai Regional Park says that spring usually begins in shallow, non-freezing swamps.
“It is those flooded meadows of Buckūnai, where the birds fly first, the water thaws first or the water of the spring ice cover occupies these meadows. And here we can see flocks of birds, ”says Ramūnas Krugelis, the director of the regional park.
Naturalists currently watch the most geese. However, pumice and a couple of winches have already been observed in Alytus district. Specialists of the Žuvintas Biosphere Reserve saw these birds. Swans can also be seen in Meteliai Regional Park in Lazdijai district.
“We have geese, the basis is grassy, each other white-fronted, gray, maybe a few. The swans flew back in the morning, the singers were silent, and several individuals were silent, ”says R. Krugelis.
In Lazdijai district, the snow has already melted, so the birds have to eat as much as possible. The weather forecast for severe cooling does not predict that spring may have actually begun in Lithuania.
“The picture and the listen, especially when they gather in the morning, when the roads are going to fly after lunch, sound like a pure spring. The wildlife world is not early, late. When that spring comes according to their perception, when they feel the right conditions, it attracts them to their places of residence, ”says R. Krugelis.
In the swamps of Buckūnai village, Lazdijai district, there are heralds of spring, and in the immediate vicinity – ice fishing enthusiasts. The director of Meteliai Regional Park says that all large water bodies in Lazdijai district are still frozen. The thickness of the ice is from 14 to just 5 centimeters. Then fishermen should be very careful as more and more suitable ones emerge.
“It is definitely not necessary to check the conditions on the ice yourself, and it is necessary to check them all the time, because in the same Metel, where there are shallow places, where there is a dark bottom, there is also each other suitable,” says R. Krugelis.
In the image sent by Arūnas Pranaitis, a specialist of the Žuvintas Biosphere Reserve, not only do birds return from warm countries, but apiaries also revive. When the sun shines, the bees fly out of the hives, albeit timidly.
