Antwerp explores bridge over Scheldt, explore Paris opts for funicular (Antwerp)
In the discussion about the feasibility of a pedestrian and bicycle bridge over the Scheldt in Antwerp, the proposal was made to opt for a cable car between the right and left bank. He also played in the French capital Paris. The construction of a cable car over a 4.5 kilometer stretch there will start in March.

The investigation into the construction of the bridge over the Scheldt is still ongoing. The challenge is to maximize accessibility without hindering inland shipping. In addition, safety guidelines must be developed. This year, this infrastructure will finally take shape on the drawing board. This pedestrian and bicycle bridge would cross the Scheldt in 2024 at the earliest.
The bridge will be attached to the Kennedytunnel, at the height of the current bicycle tunnel. It involves an investment of 200 million euros. “We are aiming for 22,500 cyclists who will use the new bridge per day,” said Alderman for Mobility Koen Kennis (N-VA) at the presentation of the bridge in 2021.
There are thoughts that pedestrians and cyclists lose too much time for a closed bridge because ships have to pass. That is why the idea arose of a cable car over the Scheldt. This form of public transport is gaining ground in several countries. Intendant of the Oosterweel connection Alexander D’Hooghe does not rule out such an option, but he also sees consequences. The capacity of such a cable car is strong if bicycles are allowed.
In Paris, the transport company also faced a choice. A smooth connection was sought between the suburbs of Créteil and Villeneuve Saint-Georges and the Paris metro network. Several options were on the table: more buses or a new bridge. Extra trams were difficult, then have to cross under highways. In the end, a cable car from Câble 1 was chosen.
1,700 travelers
Works will start next month and will last three years. It involves an investment of 132 million euros. The route is 4.5 kilometers long and there will be five stations. This distance is covered in 17 minutes, which is half faster than by bus. Ten people can sit per cabin. Cable 1 can carry 1,700 travelers per hour.
In the French city of Brest, a 460 meter long cable car was already put into operation in 2016. These infrastructure areas meet on either side of a river.
The cable car has already made its appearance in Belgium. A ‘téléphérique’ was recently put into use in Namur.
