A convoy of cars from various parts of the Czech Republic with opponents of the pandemic law arrived in Prague on Wednesday evening. Around 50 people welcomed them in Klárov. The event was one of the protests against the adoption of the pandemic law organized by the Chcípl PES movement. Some people want to spend the night on the spot, because on Thursday, the Senate, located in the nearby Valdštejnské náměstí, is to discuss the pandemic law.

The greater part of Wednesday’s event was peaceful, in the end people shouted at the passengers in the trams. People started to gather at Klárov near the tent with petitions against the adoption of the law around 6:00 p.m. Around 40 attendees listened to music and sipped drinks.

Later, Jiří Janeček, one of the organizers of the event, spoke. In his speech, he praised the fact that the Senate’s constitutional-legal committee today recommended the rejection of the government’s amendment to the pandemic law. He also repeated the criticisms of the initiative against the amendment.
Among other things, the initiative and its supporters are bothered by the fact that, according to the current proposal, people could decide on quarantine due to contact with an infected person and receive SMS messages. They claim it is a restriction of freedom.
According to Janeček, the movement wants to hold two-man patrols near the Senate overnight. According to Janeček, representatives of the initiative were also supposed to meet with the head of the Senate Miloš Vystrčil (ODS) this evening.
A convoy of dozens of cars arrived at Klárov via Mánesův most shortly before 9:00 p.m. The cars, which according to the organizers came from, for example, Karlovy Vary, Ostrava, Liberec or České Budějovice, honked their horns loudly. Some were decorated with flags or protest signs.
People on the sidewalk greeted the convoy with Czech and Slovak flags as well as a flag with the Chcípl PES logo. The cars then drove around Klárov and the surrounding area for tens of minutes. The demonstrators mostly just chanted on the sidewalk, later some shouted “masks down” at the people in the passing trams.

Amendment to the Pandemic Act
The amendment to the pandemic law was approved by the lower house last week. According to him, anti-coronavirus emergency measures will probably be able to include a wider range of activities than now. The authorities will also be able to order testing for covid-19, for example, for entrepreneurs, students, pupils and preschoolers, not just employees and other workers.
At the time when deputies were debating the law, opponents of the amendment repeatedly protested near the House of Representatives. Some erected gallows symbolizing, according to them, the pandemic law. The convenor of the events was also the Chcípl PES initiative.
While the Senate’s constitutional-legal committee today approved the rejection of the novelties, the Health Guarantee Committee recommended the Senate’s approval of the drafts.
