Hanover 96: Way to the U23! Sports director Marcus Mann because of Patrick Twumasi in the trap – 2nd Bundesliga
That’s it! In the top leagues, the winter transfer period ended on Monday. Only a few smaller leagues (including Austria, Switzerland, Turkey) have another week or two open.
Sports director Marcus Mann (37) has cleared the 96 bench with Florent Muslija (Paderborn), Valmir Sulejmani (Ingolstadt) and Tom Trybull (Sandhausen). But, like last summer, he was unable to solve the biggest problem.
Man in the Twumasi Trap!
For three weeks, the Reds released the striker from team training for the club search – with no result. The hope was low, so the disappointment is not so great. Mann and Twumasi consultant Uwe Kathmann (“LAWnSPORTS”) advised again on Monday.
Result: Twumasi will start with the U23 from Tuesday. Coach Christoph Dabrowski: “We didn’t plan for him anymore. He has to accept that he keeps fit in the U23s.”
But that doesn’t solve the problem, it’s just postponed until summer…
Twumasi cannot be placed because the Ghanaian is still too expensive for free! But the player can least do that.

In the summer of 2020, the striker came from Alavés for a fee of 700,000 euros, having played on loan in Turkey (Gaziantep) the year before. Three-year contract, around 70,000 euros monthly salary.
Twumasi only played a supporting role (25 appearances, 19 times as a substitute) for ex-coach Kocak, who brought him on. With the successors Zimmermann and now Dabrowski none at all.
No reproach, they had only inherited the Twumasi problem, like sports director Mann and new consultant Kathmann.
The fact is: Twumasi hasn’t played for more than eight months (!). Which club gets such a player? Especially since most clubs are looking for reinforcements in winter to help immediately.
Then there is the mega salary. The Reds can currently not afford a contract termination with reasonable compensation. This is evidenced by the mini offer (around 200,000 euros) with which 96 last tried. Twumasi, understandably, declined. After that, he can collect almost 1.2 million until the end of the contract in 2023.
No club pays that in Germany – except 96.
For foreign clubs that could afford Twumasi, the striker is not a sporting reinforcement. And even a loan change until the summer (e.g. Turkey, Slovenia, Azerbaijan), where the Reds would have to continue to pay most of the salary, is difficult. What will become of Twumasi’s family then? His wife and five children could lose their right of residence in Germany if Patrick is no longer under contract at 96.
Die Twumasi Trap!
For the striker, it doesn’t even matter economically whether he plays every week or not. Because he doesn’t have the usual use and point bonuses – another madness in the madness contract! But his career is likely to be in tatters after another five months without a game in the summer.
Until then, the Reds keep paying for one they have no use for – and seek a way out of the Twumasi trap.
