Five hunger strikers go to court to enforce papers (Brussels)
Five of the 475 undocumented migrants who took part in summary proceedings last year to enforce the agreement reached in July with Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration Sammy Mahdi (CD&V).
In May, 475 undocumented migrants went on hunger strike in the Beguinage Church, at the ULB and the VUB in Brussels, demanding that their stay in Belgium be regularised. The hunger strike on July 21 under Mahdi had begun to begin considering their request, it must be done.
According to spokesperson Tarik Chaoui of the Union des Sans-papiers pour la Régularisation and lawyer Marie, it has been established that only a hundred of the 475 files are at the Immigration Office. “The majority of decisions are negative and violate the commitments made by Sammy Mahdi,” they said in a statement Monday.
According to the statement, five hunger strikers have now decided to initiate summary proceedings to enforce the agreement. They receive support from l’Association pour la Défense du Droit des Étrangers (ADDE), la Coordination and Initiatives pour Réfugiés et Étrangers (CIRÉ) and la Ligue des Droits Humains (LDH).
State Secretary must receive on Radio 1: “People don’t think they can get papers through the court”, he said.
The case will be argued before the president of the court of first instance in Brussels on 2 February. That morning there will also be an action site on Poelaertplein.
