Prague 8 longs to repair the Svět Palace, the building office is powerless. Reconstruction will take place Palmovka | Company News Pražská Drbna
The listed Svět Palace in Prague-Libní is still waiting for a complete renovation. The owner of the house, Italian businessman Antonio Crispino, made minor repairs last year. However, the City Hall of Prague 8 cannot force it to complete reconstruction. On the contrary, Palmovka and Bohumil Hrabal Square will be repaired. The town hall and the town hall recently announced that there will be new construction, a redevelopment of the area, including the bus station, and a memory of the writer. Hrabal was born on March 28, 1914 and died 25 years ago, on February 3, 1997.
The building authority is powerless
There used to be a Svět vending machine in the palace, which Hrabal visited, and several of his books take place here. The house was built in the 1930s and has been dilapidated for many years. According to Prague 8 spokesman Martin Šalek, the owner had part of the facade and windows repaired last year, but they are wider than the original. “There is no other construction activity around the building,“He said.
From the point of view of the building authority, the construction does not endanger the surroundings and the building authority of Prague 8 is now helpless, according to the spokesman. Monuments still have valid conditions for repairing the interior of the building, on which they insist. The restoration of the palace has been discussed since 2006, when the town hall approved a reconstruction study. Since then, however, the repair has not moved significantly and the town hall owners have been fined in the past.

It was in the northern part of today’s bus station that houses stood, including where the writer lived and wrote.
A new block of houses will be built in Palmovka during the reconstruction at the bus station. It will contain both commercial premises and apartments. It will include a shopping arcade that connects Na Žertvách Street with Na Hrázi Street. There will also be restaurants with front gardens in the house. So-called residential areas will be created for residents, where they will be able to spend their free time. A patch with game elements or a nebula and other water elements will be created. There will also be space for a marketplace. All tram routes and part of the bus lines will be preserved, specifically electric buses or trolleybuses. The current bus station buildings will be demolished. The writer’s reminder will be included, with minor modifications, not a statue or monument. This is exactly what will create a collection of short stories by leading Czech authors, which will be based on Hrabal’s legacy.
The transformation of the square could be completed in 2025. The construction should cost 80 million crowns. The architects are now designing the documentation for the building permit, which will take them about a year and a half.
Rrabal entered the literature of the second half of the 20th century as the author of an extraordinary observational talent and captivating storytelling style. In addition to Milan Kundery, he was the world’s most famous Czech novelist during his lifetime. He was inspired by the environment and the people he knew intimately – often from the “lower” strata of society who thought they were excluded or “other”.
