President: Lithuania’s distribution focus on ensuring equal opportunities in education
The President and the Head of UNESCO discussed the priorities of Lithuania’s membership in the UNESCO Executive Board. The President emphasized that Lithuania’s main focus was on the security of journalists and access to information, as well as the fight against disinformation.
The meeting also reported on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the UNESCO agenda. The President emphasized that the issues of inclusion and equal opportunities in education were especially important for Lithuania. At the initiative of the head of state, an important step has been taken in the legislation to ensure high-quality early childhood education for children living in an environment at social risk. Focusing on equal opportunities for people with disabilities and including children with disabilities is an important part of the president’s agenda.
The President discussed the phenomenon of Kaunas modernist architecture with the head of UNESCO. The Head of State draws the attention of the Director General of UNESCO to the fact that Lithuania has submitted a nomination application to the UNESCO World Heritage Center in Paris entitled “Modernist Kaunas: Architecture of Optimism, 1919–1939”, which aims to include Kaunas in the UNESCO World Heritage List. According to the President, the architecture of Kaunas modernism is truly unique and testifies to the expression of European culture and its unique expansion in Lithuania.
At the invitation of the President, the Head of UNESCO arrived in Lithuania to participate in the opening events of Kaunas – European Capital of Culture 2022.
