The midwives of the maternity ward of the Rive-Gauche clinic resumed work on Friday January 21 at 7:30 p.m. On strike for 10 days, they demanded a revaluation of their remuneration.
They demanded a salary and statutory increase as well as hiring and to be heard, the midwives of the maternity ward of the Rive-Gauche clinic went on strike on January 12th.
In the impossibility of ensuring deliveries without these professionals, the management of the clinic had then taken the decision to temporarily close the maternity ward and to direct future mothers to other establishments in Toulouse.
In a statement, the striking midwives claimed to have no other way to be heard than to go on strike. “Coming to work with an armband “on strike” is not enough to make our management react” they wrote.
A profession under pressure
With salaries lower than those of the public, private clinics struggle to attract young midwives. According to those working in the maternity ward of the Rive Gauche clinic, these salaries “among the least attractive” even push some to leave the profession. Less numerous, those who will then remain confronted with an exhausting work rhythm. They expressed it in a joint letter: “We will return without stopping on our guard rest, our holidays, to fill the missing guards. The team is exhausted, resignations and sick leave for burn-out follow one another.
Supporters of a revaluation of the coefficient of midwives on the salary scale, the strikers resumed work without specifying the nature of the agreement which made it possible to put an end to the movement.
