Haute-Garonne: prison closed for the driver who had sown panic in a small town near Toulouse
The young man, who had almost mowed down several pedestrians in the city center of Granada near Toulouse, has just been sentenced to 18 months in prison, 9 of which are suspended
The 18-year-old man who had caused panic in downtown Granada on Saturday January 15, at market time, was tried on Monday January 18 in immediate comparison before the Toulouse Criminal Court. His rather casual attitude shocked the courtroom.
He contented himself with saying “I’m sorry” half-heartedly for all of his “work” (endangering others, refusing to comply, repeated speeding, driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol). This economy of words particularly exasperated the members of the criminal court. “Is that all you have to say about this journey, about these dangers that you have created for the population of Granada? It is violence with a car that you are accused of, it is not nothing!”, the magistrate threw at him. This attitude also puzzled the public prosecutor: “We do not have the impression that he realizes the seriousness of his actions, it is very worrying.”
The young man’s lawyer, Me Nelly Magendie tries an explanation: “His behavior is the demonstration of his deep immaturity.”
He was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment, 9 of which were suspended on probation with continued detention. He is banned from appearing in Granada for two years.
