On her 43rd birthday, Malta’s Roberta Mezzola became the youngest speaker of the European Parliament and only a third woman in office. After being elected, she paid tribute to the memory of David Sassoli and vowed to defend European values.
“In the coming years, people across Europe will expect our leadership institution and direction as our democratic and European values continue to be tested. We must resist the anti-European talk that is so easy and fast“Said Mezzola.
In her speech to MEPs, she paid special attention to the rights of people with different identities, as well as the rights of women, although she is known for her views on abortion. Recent criticism, after voting against the report, called on all parties to ensure safe access to ending the crisis.
Now, however, its position has changed.
“My position is the same as that of the parliament. The European Parliament has always been unequivocal on sexual and reproductive health. He has repeatedly called for these rights to be better protected“She added.
Mezzola, which is part of the group of the European People’s Party, is well known in Bulgaria. During the protests in 2020, she defended the then GERB, which is also from the group of the European People’s Party.
