The Netherlands just doesn’t make it against Iceland
In the second group match at the European Championship in Hungary, the Orange narrowly went down ten against Iceland: 29-28. Due to the result, the victorious group mate is through to the main phase and the Netherlands will have to play against the still scoreless Portugal on Tuesday evening.
In the last ten minutes, Iceland came often and the Orange attempt to strike in the switch. That happened often, so Dani Baijens (photo) scored six goals, but not in the final minute. Miss Jeffrey Boomhouwer first. With twenty seconds left, Samir Benghan made a blocking error and Iceland stopped giving the ball away.
At the start of both halves, the Netherlands missed too often. Iceland remained in the lead. The only compatriot in the build-up row who reached the same high level as against Hungary was Kay Smits. De Limburger gave Iceland the score with thirteen hits.
After 20-15, the national team returned to the hard game where the often doubting arbitrators from Austria very often make questionable decisions. Smits, Bobby Schagen – four out of six – and Benghanem from behind caused tension at 25-25.
