Danish authorities do not attend the Beijing Olympics – did not achieve a common EU front
The case is being updated.
According to the agency, the Danish government has been in favor of this since the beginning of December, when the United States was the first country to decide on a diplomatic boycott of the Winter Games in China. It has been the job of the countries to reach agreement between the EU, but it has not succeeded.
After a meeting between EU foreign ministers in the French city of Brest on Friday, it is clear that it will not be common front from EU countries. The Danish government nevertheless insists that it will not send representatives to China.
The parties in the Folketing have been aired this week, and there must be support for the position. A majority believe that Denmark should participate in the Olympics with athletes, but not send other official representatives.
Norway travels
The government of Norway has made it clear that it intends to be present during both the Olympics and the Paralympics, as long as the pandemic restrictions do not become so strict that it will not be natural.
– It is a long tradition for the Norwegian government to be present at the Olympic and Paralympic Games as guests of the Norwegian Sports Confederation, wrote communications adviser Guri Solberg in the government in a response to NTB this week.
Minister of Culture Anette Trettebergstuen (Labor Party) will travel to the Paralympics, while it has not been clarified which minister will travel to the Olympics.
Several say no
The Swedish government recently announced that it will not send representatives to the Beijing Olympics. The pandemic is justified, and Sports Minister Anders Ygeman told the news agency TT that it is not perceived as a political boycott.
On Friday, the Dutch government decided that it would not be represented in the Beijing Games. The reason is that Dutch spectators are not allowed to watch the games. For the same reason, the Dutch authorities stayed away from the Tokyo Olympics last year.
Japan, Australia, the United Kingdom and Canada, like the United States, have announced a political boycott of the games in China.
