Prague – The construction of the Štvanice footbridge, which will connect Holešovice and Karlín, has begun on the Prague island of Štvanice. The footbridge will measure 299.4 meters. It will be designed for pedestrians and cyclists, and ambulances will also be able to use it. On the Holešovice side, it will then be possible to raise the footbridge in the event of a flood. The service life of the bridge is 200 years. The construction will cost 298 million crowns and will last 14 months. The author of the footbridge is the architect Petr Tej. The Prague management is also preparing to transform Štvanice, where a new park will be created.
“The inhabitants of these districts took years to connect the banks of the Vltava. There will also be imaginary trails with a tunnel under Vítkov, and thus a new gate to the city will open for the Žižkovs. We will also have barrier-free access to Štvanice,” To myself).
On the Holešovice bank of the Vltava, the footbridge will have an entrance on the Bubenské nábřeží in front of the gate to the Prague Market Square. In Karlín on the Rohanské nábřeží, it leads to a cycle path leading along a flood barrier. The footbridge spans 38 meters between Karlín and Štvanice and 149 meters between Štvanice and Holešovice. According to an earlier statement from the municipality, the construction should take 14 months.
“The footbridge is designed from ultra-high quality concrete. It is a white composite material that has unique properties, high strength and resistance to the environment. This means it cannot be sprayed and water does not freeze in it. The footbridge has five fields, only about 60 meters of them, and the ramp at Štvanice will be 84 meters long.
The last field, which is at the embankment in Holešovická, will be lifting due to a possible flood. It will be possible to raise the bridge by three meters and thus increase the meter above the flood level of 2002. In other places, the footbridge will not be raised, as it is above the flood level.
Workers will start work on the basis of footbridges next week. According to Scheinherr, the rough construction could be completed this autumn. The Transport Company (DPP) will then temporarily relocate the tram line, which is closer to the river, due to the construction from 15 to 21 January. Thus, the trams will run on one track during the construction before entering the Prague Market Square.
The whole island is waiting for change in the future. A new park will be created here. Both the Holešovice and Karlín banks will be modified in the same way. On the Rohan Island in Karlín, the restored Vltava branch is planned to be restored and a park will be created there. In Holešovice, the waterfront will be modified and reconstructed, there will be a promenade or new crossings and barrier-free stops.
People can walk from Karlín to Holešovice now only via the busy Hlávkův bridge or by detour over Rohanský ostrov and Libeňský most. They can also use the ferry. They can then get to Štvanice only from Hlávek Bridge or by ferry.
In 2020, Prague opened a new footbridge from Císařský ostrov to Troja. The original collapsed at the end of 2017. Prague has a long-standing problem with bridges. The Libeň or Hlávkův bridge is in poor condition, the Palacký bridge also requires repairs, and this year the second part of the Barrandov bridge repairs will begin.
