Zurich Airport soon started with Self Baggage Drop
This spring, Zurich Airport will welcome a new feature that enables passengers to fly with luggage without having to contact employees.
Zurich Airport has had a mixed year. After a loss-making first half of 2021, the autumn figures are developing better and better. Nonetheless, Kloten Airport is forecasting a loss for 2021. The next few months will also be tense, says ZRH CEO Stephan Widrig, but then things will look up again. In line with the hoped-for upswing at Zurich Airport, they will be welcoming the new “Self Baggage Drop” (SBD) systems in spring. This means that passengers can now hand in their luggage at check-ins 2 and 3 as early as 23 hours before departure, according to the Luzernerzeitung.ch.
Modernization of the ZRH
After the recently announced test of the baggage check-in from home by Swiss, Zurich Airport is also getting on board with the modernization of baggage check-in. The airport is already promoting the latest feature that WILL be introduced this spring. Passengers will now be able to check in their luggage on their own a maximum of 23 hours before departure without queuing. Until now, this had to be handed in at the “bag drop” counter, even if the baggage label was already printed out at home.
Specifically, Zurich Airport will set up the new “Self Baggage Drop” facilities at check-ins 2 and 3. While the SBD systems in Check-in 3 are mainly intended for Swiss and Lufthansa passengers, all other airlines can use the new systems in Check-in 2.
How does the “Self Baggage Drop” work?
The new feature of the ZRH enables passengers and passengers with luggage to board their flight without ever speaking to employees. The SBD works as follows: the baggage is placed on the baggage carousel, the boarding pass is scanned and finally the bag tag is stuck on the. Alternatively, the bag tag can also be printed out and stuck on at home and the luggage placed directly on the belt. The following video from Finnair shows the process in detail:
With the new systems, the area of the airport can be used more efficiently, because fewer counters are exclusively assigned to certain airlines. Passengers can also die, while previously only two hours before departure, they can now hand in their luggage before departure.
“Higher five-digit amount” per system
As of spring 2022, Zurich Airport will open 20 such SBG systems; 16 existing counters will be closed, see above Airliner.de. However, the new systems will still need employees, for the incoming inspection and as support. Next, as before, there will be a different counter for baggage drop-off at Zurich Airport.
Zurich Airport had to dig deep into its pockets for the investment. The airport spokeswoman Bettina Kunz speaks of a “higher five-digit amount” per system. In return, however, large savings are made.
Conclusion on the coming feature at Zurich Airport
As of spring 2022, Zurich Airport will welcome a new modernization: the “Self Baggage Drop” facilities. These enable passengers to hand in their luggage independently up to 23 hours before departure. For the renovation and the systems, the airport had to make a large investment worth a “higher five-digit amount” per system. But every coin has its downside – where automation comes into effect, most jobs also fall away. At the moment, however, no information is known about this.
