1550 voluntary declarations submitted: the wave at tax offices is running out
Last year, around 1,550 people in the canton of Zurich submitted a voluntary disclosure and disclosed previously untaxed income or assets. There are now as many as before the introduction of the independent exchange of information (AEOI).
As the Finance Directorate of the Canton of Zurich announced on Thursday morning, the number of voluntary disclosures by taxpayers rose sharply to the beginning of 2017 shortly before and after the introduction of the Social Information Exchange (AEOI). The cantonal tax office recorded the peak of this development in 2018 with around 7,300 new additions. That was four times more than three years earlier. Since then the number has decreased and last year reached the level of 2015 again. In 2021 the tax office completed 3,500 voluntary reports. There were only two individual cases with a tax base of over CHF 1 million. In 60 cases, results of more than 100,000 francs post-tax.
For the canton and the municipalities, tax revenues of 37 million francs resulted from the impunity and the criminal self-disclosures and for the federal government of 9 million francs. In addition, around 882 million Swiss francs were uncovered. These disclosed assets will also be taxed in the future and will thus lead to higher tax income in the long term. 47 completed voluntary disclosures come from legal entities. In 28 cases, the taxpayers had not reported for the first time, which is why they paid a fine of 20 percent of the post-tax in addition to the post-tax. The possibility of self-disclosure without penalty was introduced in 2010. Since then, every taxable person can report himself once for tax evasion and only has to pay additional taxes and interest.
