Tax burden is saving in 16 cantons
In 16 cantons, the tax burden decreased, as the Federal Finance Administration (FFA) announced on Thursday. If the decline in a number of cantons was also small compared to previous years. The tax burden rose in ten cantons – mostly in the cantons of Friborg and Ticino. Viewed across Switzerland as a whole, the tax burden decreased (2021: 24.8 percent).
Little has changed in the cantonal distribution. Only the cantons of Schwyz and Nidwalden swap ranks in the lower range of the scale. The cantons of central Switzerland are still well below the Swiss average, with Zug showing the lowest value at 11.2 percent.
Highest tax burden in Geneva
The tax burden is again highest in some cantons of western Switzerland and in Basel-Stadt. Geneva is still the front runner with 34.2 percent. In the middle of the scale, the ranking remained unchanged.
The basis for the calculation of the tax exhaustion index 2022 is the mean value of the tax assessment years 2016 to 2018. In the calculation, the FFA is based on figures from the financial equalization and financial statistics.
