Dirk Nowitzki grilled his father-in-law during his shirt retirement: “Thank you for coming all the way from Sweden, but what I appreciate most about you is your daughter.”
Dirk Nowitzki is the greatest player in the history of the Dallas Mavericks organization. Nowitzki stayed with the franchise throughout his career, through all the ups and downs. And in 2011, the Nowitzki franchise won their only NBA championship, defeating LeBron James and the Miami Heat in one of the biggest disruptions in NBA Finals history.
Last night, the Mavericks held a jersey pension for Dirk Nowitzki, and put up their jersey # 41 in the beam. It was a special evening where the franchise honored a legend. During Nowitzki’s speech, he took a moment to thank his family, and in particular to fry his father-in-law.
While giving his speech, Dirk Nowitzki mentioned that his father-in-law flew in for the shirt’s retirement ceremony in Dallas all the way from Sweden. He thanked him for traveling all over the world for this special night but mentioned that what he appreciated most about him is his daughter, Dirk’s wife.
“My father-in-law is here today. Thank you for coming all the way from Sweden, but what I appreciate most about you is your daughter.”
Nowitzki clearly had fun on a night out. Dirk was not the only one joking during the ceremony. His former Mavs teammate and current head coach Jason Kidd joked that Nowitzki would get a 10-day contract from the team if he wanted to return right now.
Dirk took the opportunity to thank Mark Cuban and the Mavericks fan base as well, a group of supporters who have always been behind him at every stage of his career. It’s obvious there’s a lot of love between Dirk and Maverick’s fan base for everything he did for the franchise during his legendary career in the league.
