600 runners in the first marathon of the year
A course record and six annual world bests were run at the New Year’s Marathon Zurich 2022.
Two weeks before the New Year’s Marathon Zurich 2022, very cold temperatures were predicted for the running event. Despite all the precautions, the participants were able to look forward to mild temperatures on January 1st. There was also no trace of rain, snow or ice. Running was made more difficult instead of by thick fog. The race, which took place for the 17th time, traditionally started at midnight.
Arnold with a third victory, Hügli just ahead of Frei
After finishing second in the 16th New Year’s Marathon in Zurich, the Swiss Philipp Arnold ran in a fast 2:39:03 hours to his third victory in the New Year’s Marathon in Zurich. This made him the record winner of the New Year’s marathon. Dutchman Leendert Van der Lugt was a good eight minutes slower than Arnold, who was able to cross the finish line after 2:47:15 hours. In 2:48:10 hours, Nicolas Kipfmüller ran in third place shortly afterwards. Best German War Jörg Chittka (3:21:47 hours) in 14th place. Fastest woman among the 116 finishers was Maja Hügli, who finished in 3:24:16 hours 40 seconds before Janine Frei (3:24:56 hours) finished. The overall marathon podium was completed by Deirdre Keane (3:42:20 hours). Fifth place went to Julia Hartmann (3:51:45 hours), the fastest German war.
Trio is clearly committed
While the marathon runners had to complete four and a half kilometers long laps, the half marathon runners mastered the lap twice. The overall victories went to Daan De Groot (1:12:35 hours) and Klasina Brunott (1:35:38 hours). Behind the fast Dutchman, the Swiss Marco Fasel (1:13:30 hours) and the German Michael Kirchberger (1:14:36 hours) came in second and third. After the three top runners crossed the finish line, it took over seven minutes until René Eisenring (1:22:11 hours) came fourth in the 234 half marathon finisher. The second runner at the finish of the half marathon this time was the Italian Lisa Oberosler (1:37:24 hours). In the race for third place one minute later, Kathrin Roos beat Martina Steiner (1:38:29 hours) in 1:38:25 hours.
Seare Weldezghi is running in record time
In addition to the marathon and half marathon, a quarter marathon and a 750-meter kids run were also offered as part of the Zurich New Year’s Marathon 2022. While the stars of tomorrow Lealie Christen (2:35 minutes) and Keanu Christen (2:52 hours) were the winners Seare Weldezghi from Eritrea and Lessica Eschbach from Switzerland in the quarter marathon. With his second of 34:59 minutes, Seare Weldezghi even improved the existing course record. Meanwhile, Eschbach crossed the finish line after 49:06 minutes. Manuel Hügli (35:59 minutes), Ricardo Pinto (37:08 minutes), Shani Stockhammer (49:08 minutes) and Lucy Rostetter (50:01 minutes) also secured a place on the overall podium for the quarter marathon. Shani Stockhammer from Pully and the victorious Jessica Aeschbach, who die for the LG Derendingen starts, are only separated by a second in the end.
Satisfied event team draws a positive conclusion
Even if the event was under special circumstances and the team expected some rules to be observed, the event was very satisfied with the New Years Marathon Zurich 2022. Around 600 runners make the event at the start of the new year one of the most special running events of the year.
