Large transport structures of Prague. Renaissance railway and new Cubist construction for a billion
The form has been known since April Prague East terminal, which will be part of the first section of the high – speed line in the Czech Republic. The winning design came from the cooperation of the architectural studio ov-architekti and the design company Metroprojekt. The terminal will be part of the VRT Polabí corridor, which will offer fast rail connections for regular commuting to the center of the capital and at the same time convenient connections with Brno, Ostrava, Dresden or Vienna. The railway administration would like to start the construction of a network of high-speed lines in 2025. The estimated costs are around six hundred billion crowns.
The project of the Prague-Kladno railway corridor, which will also include a branch to Václav Havel Airport, has seen a significant shift. The zoning decision was made by the project of reconstruction and construction of Masaryk Railway Station, which will become a key node of this corridor in the center of Prague. The reconstruction of the Negrelli viaduct was completed, which cost almost two billion crowns. Close to the modernization is the section leading through Holešovice and Bubny, where the Railway Administration is already looking for a contractor.

“The tender for the contractor of this section is an important milestone for the entire corridor from Prague to Kladno. Together with the Kladno section, this is the actual beginning of construction, “said the head of the Railway Administration, Jiří Svoboda. Implementation should start this year, and will also continue to prepare for other sections of the corridor. The whole construction will cost about fifty billion crowns.
Another of Prague’s major railway corridors leading from the main railway station to Hostivař was modernized last year. Along with the seven-kilometer-long section, the railway station in Vršovice, the newly built stops Prague-Eden and Prague – Zahradní Město, also underwent reconstruction, which should help develop suburban railway transport. Due to the construction of a new four-track section, the corridor leading through the Strašnice residential area was canceled, which will be rebuilt into a railway promenade with a linear city park and a cycle path.

Prague also knows the winners of the international urban planning competition called Florenc 21, which will fundamentally transform the area around the transport hub into Florence and Masaryk Railway Station. He became a team of Czech studios A69 and UNIT architects in connection with the London studio Marko and Placemakers. The project should bring a change not only to the urban planning of the area, but also to the solution of the Florenc Central Bus Station and the North-South Highway.
“The winning design won us over for its urban solution with a reasonable scale and for the design of the connection between Těšnov and Žižkov with a new public space at its foot. In addition, it addresses the possibility of the future location of the new municipality in the Těšnov area, which gives the opportunity to create a new city park, “commented the deputy mayor of Prague Petr Hlaváček.
The construction of a tram bridge connecting Podolí with Smíchov for about one billion crowns should begin this year. The Dvorecký bridge, also intended for cycling and walking, was designed by architects from Atelier 6 together with designers from the Tubes company. The artist Kryštof Kintera collaborates on the form of public spaces under the arches and unique public lighting. The concrete Cubist bridge is now awaiting a joint decision (includes both a zoning decision and a building permit – editor’s note). Completion is scheduled for 2025.
