A smoldering fire broke out in a night train of the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) from Zurich to Berlin on Friday night. Nobody got hurt. Property damage occurred to the car. Rail passengers switch to a different part of the train.
The incident occurred around midnight near Mannheim in the Nightjet 470, as an ÖBB spokesman for the Keystone-SDA news agency said. The railway confirmed information from blick.ch. The train consisted of several cars with sleeping compartments. The car affected by the fire was temporarily withdrawn from service or “taken out of line”.
It was suspected that someone had set fire to paper in the towel dispenser in a train toilet. When the fire was noticed, no open fire was visible to the information. The driver chilled the towel rail with fire extinguishers.
The Nightjets are ÖBB’s night trains. The one between Zurich and Berlin runs daily. The journey takes a good eleven and a half hours. ÖBB cooperates with its partner railways in Switzerland (SBB), in Germany (DB), in Italy (Trenitalia), in France (SNCF) and in the Netherlands (NS) for their night trains, including seating cars, couchettes and sleeping cars.
