RETRO: Christmas memories. The presents were carried by a bounty grandmother and the traveler received dinner
Christmas 1953 and new dolls.
One has always had to be close to one – the fate of the other has never been indifferent to anyone. My childhood was really modest, but very rich in snow. But it was customary for us to always have an extra chair at the kitchen table on Christmas Day. This is because if a passenger had nowhere to go in the evening, he could enter and not be alone that day. How many potters, glaziers, and tinkerers were in that post-war period, but at that time they walked and were grateful for a little money, food or a bit of space on sheepskin or straw for sleeping. I saw for myself that such a lone pilgrim was found on this day and was given food and a place in my hometown.
PHOTO: Christmas nostalgia. Retro ornaments reminiscent of childhood. Did you have one too?
How was the Christmas of my childhood? There are few gifts, a poor tree, hung only with apples, nuts and later pieces wrapped in tinfoil, but plenty of old customs, customs, well-being and love. And the end of the day was a joint trip with the parents to the festive midnight, to which the musicians in every part of the village had already been invited by famous fanfares.

Christmas photo 1909-10 by Josef Soukup.Christmas after 1870 – Dolení Štěpanice, Kout. Dad prepared a crib with a moving belt, mom with her grandmother and aunt Pepa baked cakes in a bread oven. Smaller and large “German”. The Christmas tree was not yet known. The presents were brought to the children by the Generous Grandmother. She was a disguised aunt under a white cloth, a gift box in her hand, nuts, apples, dried pears, and plums in her hand. The adults stood at a table in the corner of the large room, very dimly lit, the children did not see the grandmother enter and leave.
RETRO: They know our tears and secret desires. The toys of our childhood are full of memories
When her aunt moved away, the Generous Grandmother stopped walking. She took on her role without disguising her mother, not loving deception and fright. He did not suffer on Christmas Eve. The presents were then on the table in the morning. In the evening and in the morning, a longer solemn prayer was read, the Christmas section of Scripture. There was coffee and cakes for dinner, and again for God’s sake in the morning. Whoever could, he went to church. From the church, people went somewhere to “kill” if the weather and health allowed. The mentioned “Pepíček” was my grandfather Josef Soukup, he was later a district veterinarian in Jilemnice and Jičín.
