“Caught” while he cuts the route of the Vienna City Marathon
On 12 September, the British musician James Cottriall ran the Vienna City Marathon, setting a hair-raising personal best of 2:56:46. After further analysis of his result by Derek Murphy of marathoninvestigation.com, it became clear that Cottriall cut the course between 32 and 35 kilometers, setting a staggering 5K time split by nine minutes.
Cottriall had a 3:10 to 3:15 marathon pace at the 30km mark when he decided to cut the course.
After the marathon, the singer made the rounds of the media, appearing on the Austrian news and doing an interview with Heute.at, taking the opportunity to promote his new record. Cottriall also spoke to Heute about his four months of training before the race where he ran 100km a week. But on further investigation, his highest training in the past year was a 90km week.
Cottriall crossed the line in 75th place and said after the race that breaking the three-hour barrier was a lifelong dream. In 2019, Cottriall legitimately ran the Vienna City Marathon in 4:03:51 and the LA Marathon in 3:55:04. “I’m not sure what his motives are,” Murphy says. “He would have run a fast time and still have broken his personal best in the marathon even without cutting that part of the circuit.”
Earlier this year, Cottriall released his fourth album “Let’s Talk”, which was written during various blocks in Austria. He also appeared as Fauke on the Austrian version of The Masked Singer in 2020.
