Thus the heroic dead of Nyíradony in 1956 lost his life
Debrecen – The 21-year-old guard was in the Kossuth barracks when Soviet troops marching into Debrecen launched an attack.
Recently, a database of the Ministry of Defense (HM) and the Institute and Museum of Military History (HIM) entitled Memorandum 1956 with data on those who fell in the Revolution and the War of Independence was posted on the Internet. István Topor, a local historian from István Kujbus in Nyíradony, never found out. His writing is published here.
This is where the sergeant, who died at the age of 21, rests
He applied to the military police
I taught in Nyíradony for 22 years, but I don’t remember a single time that his name was uttered at the ceremonies on October 23rd. The discovery made me curious, so I started an “investigation.”
István Kujbus, a 21-year-old sentinel, was on leave in Nyíradony-Tamásipuszta when the revolution broke out on October 23, 1956. Due to the events, he was unable to return to his unit, so he reported to the Debrecen military police on November 3 to notify him and arrange for his placement. It was housed in the Kossuth Barracks, which was then the object of the 48th Rifle Regiment.
The next day, at 4:15 a.m., on November 4, Soviet troops marching into Debrecen launched an attack on the surrounding Kossuth Barracks.
Who was István Kujbus?
He was born on May 18, 1935 in Nyíradony. His father was József Kujbus, his mother was called Erzsébet Kiss. There were eight brothers. The family tried to support themselves from farming. They were mainly engaged in tobacco growing. The eight classes completed by Stephen and his brothers are also siblings on the farm. He and his brother, John, wanted to continue their studies at a military school.
In 1956, he enlisted in the army deputy training regiment of the Hungarian People’s Army for actual military service in Rétság.
István Kujbus was mortally wounded during the siege of the Kossuth barracks.
According to the stories, hearing the shooters, someone waking up from their sleep turned on the lights in the room. Building No. 2 was hit by a shooter fired from a Soviet tank. Three soldiers were immediately killed in the explosion caused by the gun: Lieutenant Sándor Pataki, Sergeant István Kujbus and Section Leader György Bujdosó. The deceased Hungarian soldiers were wrapped in blankets and buried in the yard of the barracks.
Sergeant Sándor Bartalis, who arrived in Komádi, died at the clinic on November 10 due to a fracture of the skull. And ten soldiers were wounded.
János Kujbus, the brother of István, who died a heroic death, after hearing that there was a firefight in Debrecen in the morning, immediately went to the barracks to find out what had happened. Then he was told that one of the three deceased soldiers was his brother.
Posthumous promotion
János Kujbus wanted to receive his brother’s body so that he could be buried at home in Tamásipuszta under decent conditions. A few days later, they received permission from the Soviet headquarters to exhume. On November 9, the soldiers were excavated. His brother was present at the excavation, and he identified the corpse of his brother wrapped in a blanket. The corps’ doctors examined the dead and then gave permission to the relatives to remove the corpses.
After that, the remains of István Kujbus were repatriated by his family and buried in the Tamásipuszta cemetery. He rested here until 1982.
On the death of his father, József Kujbus, the remains of the soldier who died at the age of 21 were exhumed and the XXVII. plot A on page 39-40. He was buried in a redeemed family grave next to his father. In 1986, his mother and then his younger brother, György, were placed here for the rest.
On October 23, 1990, on the occasion of the 34th anniversary of the revolution, Lajos Für, the Minister of Defense of the Antall government, granted posthumous promotions to the heroic dead soldiers of the Kossuth Barracks. Lieutenant Sándor Pataki was promoted to Major, György Bujdosó Section Officer, István Kujbus, Ferenc Solymosi and Sándor Bartalis to Lieutenant General.
On this day, a memorial plaque to the soldiers killed in the Soviet attack was inaugurated in the courtyard of the Kossuth Barracks in the presence of the Minister of Defense.
More twists and turns
In the spring of 2017, another turn occurred in connection with the tomb of the heroic dead resting in the Public Cemetery. The time of the redemption of the tomb has expired. At that time, he contacted the daughter of István Kujbus’s sister Ilona, Ilona Kovács, the customer service of the recruitment office of the 2nd Military Administration Center in Debrecen, and asked the Hungarian Armed Forces for the hero’s dead grave to be released from the obligation to redeem the grave and declared protected.
Following the announcement, the burial site was surveyed by professionals. Examination of the available documents later after the grave of the dead grave. On April 4, 2017, the specialist responsible for the care of the war grave informed AKSD Kft., Which operates the Nagyerdei Public Cemetery in Debrecen. the customer service department that the grave is the heroic grave of the dead and asked him to refrain from further collecting the grave redemption fee from the family.
In April 2017, a written resolution was requested from the 2nd Military Administration Center of the Military Administration and Central Registry Command of the Hungarian Armed Forces, which contains the fact that István Kujbus is a heroic deceased and buried according to the law’s hero burial fee. .
As a result of the reorganization of military tasks, the process of protected declaration was unfortunately interrupted.
In order to preserve the grave, I have had lively correspondence with AKSD Városgazdálkodási Kft. In recent weeks. cemetery customer service, head of the “Forgotten Memory” War Grace Research Group, and a specialist from the Military Remembrance and War Graves Directorate.
As a result, Ferencné Kardos, the head of the cemetery customer service of AKSD Városgazdálkodási Kft., Confirmed at the level dated 26 November this year that István Kujbus is buried in a grave.
I forwarded the above letter to the competent authorities. Thus, hopefully, a written statement will be issued soon that the tomb will be protected.
István Kujbus also keeps his name as a couple in plot 56 of the public cemetery.
