major works will begin at Matabiau station in January
Renovation work on the Matabiau station in Toulouse began in 2017 with, in particular, the arrival of a new square. But the second phase of the site, more spectacular, will begin in January 2022. Details.
The Matabiau station de Toulouse is getting a makeover. The first renovation works, characterized by the arrival of a new, more refined square, began almost three years ago. But the second phase of the site, including the restructuring of the halls and the accessibility of all the buildings, will not begin until Monday, January 3, 2022. The end of the station improvement project, called “NeÔmatabiau Is scheduled for September 2023.
New sales and service areas at Matabiau station
Work will therefore continue inside Matabiau station. The first step is to create a new point of sale and service near Hall 1. It will include a waiting room, toilets, reception, dedicated assistance for disabled travelers and a lost property store.
Car rental companies will also be concentrated right next to the drop-off and an elevator will be installed to more easily reach “rental vehicles parked on the third floor of the EFFIA car park”, explains the SNCF Gares & Connexions group. Finally, a new ticket office will be installed on the forecourt of the station, just in front of the metro station.
A shopping gallery will link the two rooms
The second stage of the project will give rise to a whole new shopping mall bright, called the “travelers gallery” between halls 1 and 2. In addition, on the first floor, a restaurant and a reception will offer a panoramic view on Hall 2 and the station forecourt.
Renovation of the entire building
“Floors, walls, ceilings, the whole ground floor will be restructured and embellished, for more be consistent with the heritage value of the building (listed as a historic monument since 1984, editor’s note) ”, continues the SNCF Gares & Connexions group. Hall 2 will notably reveal its original metal structures and the main entrances will be refocused under the iconic clock.
Accessibility at the heart of the project
The objective of the project is also to improve the accessibility of the station. Orientation signage will be drawn on the various routes, including for the visually impaired. In total, five new elevators will be installed, two of which are used as a link between hall 1 and the North underpass. The latter will also be expanded. Finally, five escalators will be added to those already present. And two LED screens will inform passengers in Hall 2.
