This mother-daughter couple demands a royal double take!
To draw attention to Lucia Day on Monday, Sweden’s royal family shared one new photo of Princess Estelle and her younger brother Prince Oscar dressed up in costumes to celebrate. The holiday of December 13 honors a young girl who would secretly provide food for persecuted Christians. According to history, St. Lucia would have a light on her head so she had both hands free to carry the goods.
Princess Estelle, 9, played the role of St. Lucia and wore a white dress with red belt while carrying on a candy basket while posing in front of a Christmas tree with Prince Oscar, 5, who wears a red ensemble complete with Santa Claus hat. Mother Princess Victoria stood behind the camera to capture the moment – and the Instagram post made sure to give the heir to the Swedish throne proper picture credit.
The royal family also shared flashbacks of Princess Victoria, Prince Carl Philip and Princess Madeleine who participated in the tradition as early as 1984 – and it is difficult to separate Princess Victoria and her daughter!

In the old pictures, Queen Silvia helps to attach a crown of candles to Princess Victoria’s head when her younger siblings Prince Carl Philip and Princess Madeleine look on. In another image, Princess Victoria poses with her brother, who comes into the spirit with his own ensemble, including a tall hat adorned with stars.
Princess Estelle and Prince Oscar have dressed up for the occasion before, including 2019 when their portrait included the siblings rides a horse on vacation.
The Swedish royals have also shared other Christmas traditions with the public, e.g. lit Advent candles and welcoming Christmas trees to the palace.

Princess Estelle is the eldest child of Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel, as well as King Carl XVI Gustaf’s eldest granddaughter, which makes her second in line to the Swedish throne after her mother.
Even at a young age, Princess Estelle is preparing for her future role as monarch. In October 2020, she went with her mother Princess Victoria and grandfather King Carl Gustaf inauguration of the Golden Bridge in Stockholm.
And the princess showed her excitement for the role during the summer by dressing in folk costumes to celebrate National Day in Sweden with Prince Oscar. She was depicted in a traditional Swedish national dress – however, she is too young to wear the hat, known as a Swedish suit. The headscarf is only worn by Swedish princesses when they are married.
