Miss Belgium among the favorites of the Miss Universe contest: “It’s the very first time”
If there is one year when Belgium can dream of being crowned at the prestigious Miss Universe competition, it is this year. Kedist Deltour, 24, Miss Belgium, is in Eilat (Israel) to defend the colors of Belgium and many bookmakers rank her in the European top 5. The young woman, in any case, fully believes in it, just like the president of the Miss Belgium committee who was to join on site this weekend.
A prognosis that Darline Devos, of the Miss Belgium Committee, seems to confirm to our colleagues from HLN: “We often see Belgium in the top 5 on social networks. I also notice the difference with other years. People talk about Kedist here, delegates from other countries know her by name. And this is the very first time. Usually they just say ‘ah, the Belgian candidate’. Its appearance and history stand out. “
An arrival in the top 5 which would be experienced as an achievement: “Exactly forty years ago, we achieved it once with Dominique Van Eeckhout, Miss Belgium 1981. She came in fourth. Hopefully we can do the same with Kedist now, or maybe even more. “
An outfit in the colors of Belgium
In his suitcases, Kedist mentioned his national costume which refers to his dual origin, Ethiopian by birth and Belgian by adoption. It was made by a Cinacian stylist, Roman Vandycke, who has been designing the national costume for Miss Belgium for 4 years in international competitions. He was inspired by the double origin of the Miss and bet on feathers, to express this notion of flight from Ethiopia to Belgium. The Miss should also shine in pretty evening dresses provided by Atelier ExC.
Kedist has been on site for 2 weeks where she is preparing with the other candidates, as reported by our colleagues from Sudinfo. She seems very confident in her chances of becoming the next Miss Universe. She was well prepared, including a one-week internship in Houston, Texas, at an academy run by a former Miss USA who coaches Misss from around the world and prepares them for major international competitions. She was also able to perfect her English there. More recently, in Eilat, she had her interview with the jury which, it seems, went well.
An emotional video
She also provided the jury, like all the other candidates, with a video in which she introduces herself. Kedist took advantage of his trip to Ethiopia last November to shoot it. She is obviously loaded with emotions since touring the heart of her family that she had not seen since she was adopted by a Belgian family at the age of 10 (she is 24 today). During her trip to the land of her ancestors, she had found her biological father but also discovered the existence of three half-brothers. The video is sure to touch the hearts of the most sensitive souls, that’s for sure.
In short, for this election, the Miss wants to believe it and really hopes to bring the crown back to Belgium. We will be fixed on this subject Monday very early in the morning …
